Mary – Chosen by God

Jan 14, 2025

Welcome, friends, to our exploration of Mary, a remarkable young woman whose unwavering faith and obedience played a pivotal role in God's grand plan of salvation. Today, we'll dive into her character, her unique calling, and the profound significance of her response to God's extraordinary invitation. Get ready to be inspired!

Section 1: Who Was Mary?

Mary was a young Jewish woman living in the humble town of Nazareth, Galilee, around 4 B.C. She was betrothed to Joseph, a carpenter and a descendant of the great King David. On the surface, Mary's life seemed ordinary by societal standards, but her heart was extraordinary in faith and humility.

Mary likely spent her days engaged in the typical tasks of a traditional Jewish household – cooking, cleaning, and weaving. As a young woman pledged to be married to Joseph, she was formally engaged in a commitment as binding as marriage itself.

But what truly sets Mary apart is her unwavering faith and submission to God's will, as we'll see when the angel Gabriel announced that she would bear the Son of God.

Pause and reflect: Isn't it amazing how God often chooses the most ordinary among us for monumental tasks? It's a beautiful reminder that He sees our hearts, not just our circumstances.

Section 2: Mary's Calling and Response

In Luke 1:28-38, we witness Mary's life-changing encounter with the angel Gabriel. Despite her initial fear and confusion, she embraced God's plan with remarkable humility, responding, "I am the Lord's servant. May your word to me be fulfilled." (Luke 1:38)

Mary's response reveals key aspects of her incredible character:

Faith: Mary trusted God's word, even though the virgin birth was unprecedented and would bring personal challenges.
Humility: She saw herself as God's servant, ready to submit to His will without question.
Courage: Mary faced the social stigma of being an unwed mother, relying on God's strength to endure.

Consider this: How can we emulate Mary's faith and courage when God calls us to step out of our comfort zones? Her example is truly inspiring!

Section 3: The Legacy of Mary

Mary's obedience made her the mother of Jesus, the Messiah. She witnessed His birth, ministry, crucifixion, and resurrection. Her song, the Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55), reflects her deep knowledge of Scripture and her gratitude for God's mercy and faithfulness.

Through Mary, we see how God uses the humble and faithful to accomplish His purposes. Her story reminds us that no one is too small or insignificant to be part of God's plan.

Pause and reflect: What legacy are you leaving as a servant of God? Mary's life challenges us to make an impact through our faith and obedience.

As we conclude, remember that Mary's story is a testament to God's power to do the impossible through those who trust Him. Her life encourages us to say "yes" to God, no matter how daunting the task.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the example of Mary, who trusted You wholeheartedly. Help us have faith like hers and say "yes" to your plans even when we don't fully understand them. Use us for Your purposes and Your glory. Amen.

Thank you for joining me in this journey through Scripture, friends. Let us carry Mary's example of faith, humility, and courage into our lives, trusting God's perfect plan. What an inspiration she is!
