What Bible Journaling Really Is For Beginners
Jul 04, 2026
Let’s slow this down together.
Bible journaling is simply a way of spending time with God and responding to His Word.
That’s it.
It is not a creative competition.
It is not a spiritual performance.
It is not about producing something beautiful for others to see.
It is about creating space for God to speak and for you to respond.
Psalm 1:2 describes a beautiful picture:
“But whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on His law day and night.”
That word “meditate” simply means to pause.
To reflect.
To stay with something long enough for it to sink in.
Bible journaling helps us do exactly that.
✨ You Don’t Need Experience to Begin
Let’s gently release something here.
You do not need:
- artistic skills
- fancy supplies
- perfect handwriting
- deep theological knowledge
You only need a willing heart.
God is not measuring your pages.
He is meeting your presence.
Sometimes we think spiritual practices are for “more mature” believers.
But Jesus invites everyone.
Even beginners.
Even hesitant hearts.
Even those who feel unsure.
🌼 A Simple Beginner-Friendly Way to Start
Let’s walk through this slowly.
No pressure.
Just clarity.
- Choose a Short Passage
Start with something simple and familiar:
- Psalm 23
- Psalm 46
- Matthew 6:25–34
- John 15:1–5
- Philippians 4:6–7
Don’t overthink it.
Pick one.
Just one.
- Read It Slowly
This is where beginners often rush.
But Bible journaling invites us to slow down.
Read the passage once.
Then read it again.
Then pause.
Ask:
- What stands out to me?
- What feels personal today?
Psalm 46:10 says:
“Be still, and know that I am God.”
Stillness is part of learning.
✨ 3. Write What You Notice
Now comes your response.
And it does not need to be complicated.
You might write:
- A verse in your own words
- A phrase that stood out
- A short prayer
- A simple reflection
For example:
“God, I feel distracted today, but I want to hear You more clearly.”
That is Bible journaling.
Honest.
Simple.
Real.
🌿 4. Talk to God on the Page
Think of your journal as a conversation space.
Not a workbook.
Not an assignment.
Just a place where you and God meet.
You can write things like:
- “Lord, help me trust You in this area…”
- “I don’t fully understand this, but I want to learn…”
- “Thank You for reminding me of this today…”
God is not intimidated by your honesty.
🌼 When You Feel Like You’re Doing It Wrong
Let’s be honest.
This is where many beginners stop.
They think:
- “My page doesn’t look good.”
- “I don’t know what to write.”
- “I’m not doing this correctly.”
But Bible journaling has no performance standard.
There is no grading system.
There is only presence.
Romans 8:26 reminds us:
“The Spirit helps us in our weakness…”
Even when you feel unsure, God is still present with you in the process.
✨ What If You Don’t Know What to Write?
Start with honesty.
That’s always enough.
Try simple prompts:
- “God, today I feel…”
- “What stands out to me is…”
- “I need help with…”
- “Thank You for…”
Even one sentence is enough.
Some days, even a word is enough.
🌿 Keep It Small on Purpose
One of the most freeing things you can do as a beginner is keep it small.
- 5–10 minutes
- One passage
- One response
You are not building a performance.
You are building a rhythm.
Zechariah 4:10 reminds us:
“Do not despise these small beginnings…”
Small is not failure.
Small is foundation.
✨ What Bible Journaling Grows in You
Over time, something beautiful happens.
You begin to:
- notice Scripture more deeply
- remember verses more easily
- slow down in your thoughts
- recognize God’s voice in everyday life
Not because the journal changes you.
But because time with God does.
🌼 A Gentle Way to Begin This Week
If you want something practical, try this:
Choose one verse each day for three days.
That’s it.
No pressure to decorate.
No pressure to be creative.
Just:
- read
- write one thought
- pray one simple prayer
That’s how beginners grow.
🌿 Reflection Questions
Take a quiet moment with these:
- What has kept me from starting Bible journaling before?
- What do I hope to experience through it?
- Where do I feel God inviting me to slow down?
- What would “simple faithfulness” look like for me this week?
- How do I usually respond when I read Scripture?
🙏 Prayer
Father,
Thank You for inviting us into relationship with You.
As we learn what Bible journaling looks like, help us release pressure and comparison.
Remind us that we don’t need to be experts to spend time with You.
Teach us to slow down.
To listen.
To respond with honest hearts.
And to find joy in Your Word again.
Let these small beginnings grow into steady rhythms of faith.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
🌿 A Gentle Invitation
Friend, if you’re just starting, you don’t need to catch up.
You don’t need to do it perfectly.
You just need to begin.
One verse.
One page.
One honest moment with God.
And over time, those small beginnings become a beautiful place of encounter.
