Fall Quiet Time Essentials

bible journal close to jesus come to jesus quiet time seasons Aug 16, 2026

There’s something about fall that makes us want to slow down.

Maybe it's the cooler mornings, the changing colors, or the simple invitation to linger a little longer with a warm cup of coffee in our hands. Even if you live somewhere that doesn't experience the dramatic colors of autumn, there's something about this season that quietly reminds us that change is happening.

The days become a little different.

The routines begin to shift.

Summer comes to a close, and life starts filling up again with school schedules, work commitments, holiday planning, and everyday responsibilities.

I don't know about you, but this time of year often makes me ask a simple question:

How can I stay close to Jesus when life gets busy again?

Because if we're honest, our quiet time is often one of the first things we sacrifice when our calendars become full.

We don't intend to.

We simply tell ourselves we'll read tomorrow. We'll pray later. We'll spend more time with God when things settle down.

But somehow, "later" keeps moving.

And before we know it, our souls begin to feel as hurried as our schedules.

Maybe that's why I love the invitation Jesus gives us in Matthew 11:28:

"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."

Notice what Jesus doesn't say.

He doesn't tell us to figure everything out first.

He doesn't ask us to become more organized before coming to Him.

He simply says,

Come.

That's the invitation.

And perhaps fall is the perfect season to accept it once again.

More Than a Cozy Morning

When people think about quiet time, they often picture a cozy chair, a candle, a beautiful Bible, and a steaming mug of coffee.

There's nothing wrong with those things.

In fact, they can help create an atmosphere that encourages us to slow down.

But here's what I've learned.

The heart of quiet time isn't found in the setting.

It's found in the Savior.

You could have the prettiest journal, the perfect reading nook, and all the matching highlighters—and still rush through your time with God.

Or you could sit at your kitchen table before everyone else wakes up with nothing more than your Bible and an open heart.

God isn't looking for perfection.

He's inviting relationship.

That takes so much pressure off, doesn't it?

Our quiet time isn't another task to complete.

It's an opportunity to be with the One who already loves us.

Let's Slow This Down for a Moment

One of my favorite stories is found in Luke 10.

Martha is busy preparing.

Mary is sitting.

At first glance, it almost feels unfair.

After all, someone had to prepare the meal.

Someone had responsibilities.

Someone had work to do.

But Jesus gently points out that Mary had chosen what was better.

Let's imagine being there.

The house is full.

Dinner is cooking.

Conversations are happening.

Everyone seems busy.

Yet Mary chooses to sit at the feet of Jesus.

She isn't ignoring life.

She's putting first what matters most.

What does this show us about God?

It shows us that Jesus values our presence more than our performance.

He isn't impressed by how productive we are.

He delights in being with us.

And that's still true today.

What Are Your Quiet Time Essentials?

When we hear the word "essentials," we usually think about things we need to purchase.

But many of the most important essentials can't be bought.

Here are a few that I've found make the biggest difference.

A Bible You Love Opening

It doesn't have to be expensive.

It doesn't need fancy covers or beautiful artwork.

It simply needs to be one you'll actually open.

Sometimes we spend more time searching for the perfect Bible than reading the one we already have.

Start there.

Open it.

Read slowly.

Let God's Word speak.

A Journal for Honest Conversations

Your journal doesn't need perfect handwriting.

It doesn't need polished prayers.

Some days it may simply say,

"Lord, I'm tired."

Other days it may be filled with gratitude.

Questions.

Scripture.

Prayer requests.

What matters isn't how beautiful it looks.

What matters is that it becomes a place where your heart meets God.

A Simple Plan

One reason quiet times become overwhelming is because we think we have to read large portions of Scripture every day.

But slow growth is still growth.

One chapter.

A few verses.

One Psalm.

Even one verse can stay with you throughout the day.

Don't underestimate what God can do with small moments surrendered to Him.

Creating Space Instead of Waiting for It

Here's something I've had to learn again and again.

Space doesn't usually appear on its own.

We have to make room for it.

Jesus often withdrew to lonely places to pray (Luke 5:16).

Think about that.

If anyone had a full schedule, it was Jesus.

Crowds followed Him.

People constantly needed Him.

Yet He intentionally stepped away to spend time with His Father.

If Jesus needed that time, how much more do we?

Sometimes creating space means waking up fifteen minutes earlier.

Sometimes it means putting the phone down.

Sometimes it means saying no to something good so we can say yes to something better.

Not because we're trying to earn God's love.

But because we long to enjoy His presence.

The Essentials You Already Have

As I've sat with this idea, I've realized something.

The most important quiet time essentials aren't physical at all.

They're spiritual.

A willing heart.

An open Bible.

A listening spirit.

A teachable attitude.

A desire to know Jesus more.

Those are things God delights to meet.

He isn't asking us to have everything together.

He's asking us to come.

Again.

And again.

And again.

What Happens When We Slow Down?

Maybe not immediately.

Maybe you won't leave every quiet time feeling emotional or inspired.

Some mornings may feel wonderfully rich.

Others may feel ordinary.

That's okay.

Faith isn't built only during extraordinary moments.

It's built through faithful ones.

Day after day.

Verse after verse.

Prayer after prayer.

Little by little.

Like seeds planted in healthy soil.

You may not notice growth today.

But one day you'll realize you're responding differently.

Trusting more.

Worrying less.

Recognizing God's voice more quickly.

Finding peace in places that once brought anxiety.

That's often how spiritual growth happens.

Quietly.

Steadily.

Faithfully.

Fall Is an Invitation

Every season teaches us something.

Spring reminds us of new beginnings.

Summer reminds us to keep growing.

Winter reminds us to trust even when everything feels still.

And fall?

Fall reminds us to slow down.

To notice.

To reflect.

To remember God's faithfulness.

Leaves don't cling tightly to the branches forever.

They let go when it's time.

Maybe God is gently inviting us to do the same.

To let go of hurry.

To release distractions.

To surrender expectations.

And simply sit with Him.

Because His presence is where our hearts find rest.

Practical Ways to Begin This Week

You don't need to overhaul your entire schedule.

Start with one simple step.

  • Choose a consistent place for your quiet time.
  • Keep your Bible and journal nearby.
  • Read one passage slowly instead of rushing through several chapters.
  • Write one sentence about what stood out to you.
  • End by thanking God for one specific blessing.
  • Carry one verse with you throughout the day.

Simple doesn't mean insignificant.

Often, the smallest habits become the strongest roots.

Journal Prompts

Take a moment with me and reflect on these questions:

  • What usually distracts me from spending time with God?
  • When do I feel most connected to Him?
  • What is one small change I can make this week to create space for quiet time?
  • What has God been reminding me of lately?
  • How have I seen His faithfulness in this season?

Write honestly.

God already knows your heart.

Your journal is simply a place to meet Him there.

A Prayer

Father,

Thank You for always inviting me to come close. Thank You that You never ask me to earn Your love or prove my worth before spending time with You.

Help me slow down in this busy season. Teach me to choose Your presence over constant productivity. Give me a heart that longs for Your Word and ears that are ready to hear Your voice.

When distractions pull me away, gently draw me back again. Help my quiet time become more than another item on my to-do list. Let it become a place where I know You more deeply and trust You more fully.

Thank You for being faithful in every season.

In Jesus' name,

Amen.
