30 Bible Verses About Thankfulness

bible verses god's goodness gratitude thankfulness journal thanksgiving Sep 30, 2026

There are days when gratitude comes easily.

You wake up rested.

The sun is shining.

Your family is doing well.

A prayer has been answered.

Something you've been waiting for finally falls into place.

And you find yourself saying, “Thank You, Lord,” without even thinking about it.

But then there are other days.

The days when the answer hasn't come.

The relationship is still difficult.

The bills are still waiting.

The house is still noisy.

Your plans didn't work out.

You're tired.

And gratitude feels a little harder.

I've been there too.

And I think that's one of the reasons Scripture has so much to say about thankfulness.

Biblical gratitude isn't pretending everything is perfect.

It's learning to recognize God's goodness even when life isn't.

Thankfulness doesn't mean we ignore the hard things.

It means we remember that the hard things aren't the whole story.

God is still faithful.

He is still present.

He is still good.

So today, let's slow down and spend some time in 30 Bible verses about thankfulness.

You don't have to read through them quickly.

Maybe choose one each day.

Write it in your journal.

Pray it back to God.

Put it somewhere you can see it.

Let Scripture teach your heart to notice God's goodness.

1. Psalm 7:17

“I will give to the LORD the thanks due to his righteousness, and sing praise to the name of the LORD, the Most High.”

Thankfulness begins with remembering who God is.

He is righteous.

He is worthy of praise.

And even when our circumstances are changing, His character remains steady.

Sometimes we don't know what tomorrow will bring.

But we know who God is.

And that gives us a reason to thank Him.

2. Psalm 9:1

“I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.”

I love the phrase “with my whole heart.”

Thankfulness isn't meant to be something we do halfway.

David intentionally remembers what God has done.

That's a wonderful practice for us too.

What has God done in your life?

Where has He provided?

Where has He protected you?

Where has He answered prayer?

Take some time to remember.

3. Psalm 30:4

“Sing praises to the LORD, O you his saints, and give thanks to his holy name.”

Sometimes gratitude needs to become a choice.

Not because we feel like singing.

Not because everything is going perfectly.

But because God is still worthy.

His name is still holy.

His goodness is still true.

4. Psalm 34:1

“I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.”

“At all times.”

That's a challenging phrase.

It doesn't mean every moment feels good.

It means we can continue turning our hearts toward God through every kind of season.

Gratitude becomes less about circumstances and more about trust.

5. Psalm 50:14

“Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and perform your vows to the Most High.”

Sometimes thankfulness really does feel like a sacrifice.

Especially when we're disappointed.

Especially when we're waiting.

Especially when we don't understand.

But choosing gratitude in those moments can become an act of faith.

We're saying, “God, I may not understand this, but I still trust You.”

6. Psalm 92:1

“It is good to give thanks to the LORD, to sing praises to your name, O Most High.”

It is good to give thanks.

Not because gratitude makes every problem disappear.

But because gratitude turns our attention toward God.

And sometimes that's exactly what our hearts need.

7. Psalm 95:2

“Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!”

I love the invitation here.

Come into His presence with thanksgiving.

Imagine beginning your prayer time that way.

Before asking for anything, pause and say:

“Lord, thank You.”

Thank You for today.

Thank You for Your mercy.

Thank You for Your presence.

Thank You for Jesus.

Thank You for another opportunity to walk with You.

8. Psalm 100:4

“Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name!”

Psalm 100 is such a beautiful reminder that thanksgiving changes how we enter God's presence.

We don't have to wait until we have everything figured out.

We can come as we are.

And we can begin by remembering His goodness.

9. Psalm 103:2

“Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.”

Don't forget.

That's important.

We are forgetful people.

We forget the prayers God answered.

We forget the ways He provided.

We forget how He carried us through seasons we thought we couldn't survive.

That's why remembering matters.

Write it down.

Tell the story.

Keep a gratitude journal.

Remember what God has done.

10. Psalm 107:1

“Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!”

His love endures.

Not for a season.

Not only when we're doing well.

Forever.

What a reason to be thankful.

11. Psalm 118:24

“This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

This verse is easy to read quickly.

But pause for a moment.

This is the day.

Not yesterday.

Not tomorrow.

Today.

There may be things you wish were different about today.

But God has given you this day.

What can you thank Him for right now?

12. Psalm 136:1

“Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.”

Sometimes repetition is good for our souls.

We need to hear the truth again.

God is good.

His love endures.

When circumstances make us question God's goodness, Scripture reminds us of what is true.

13. Isaiah 12:4

“Give thanks to the LORD, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the peoples, proclaim that his name is exalted.”

Thankfulness isn't always meant to stay private.

Sometimes our gratitude becomes a testimony.

Tell someone what God has done.

Share the story of His faithfulness.

Encourage another person with the ways you've seen Him work.

Your story may become the encouragement someone else needs.

14. Daniel 2:23

“To you, O God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise, for you have given me wisdom and might.”

Daniel thanked God for giving him wisdom.

That's something we can pray too.

When you need wisdom, thank God that He is the source of it.

When you need strength, remember that He is able to provide what you don't have in yourself.

15. Luke 17:15–16

After Jesus healed ten lepers, only one returned to give thanks.

Luke tells us:

“Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice.”

Only one came back.

That makes me pause.

How often do we receive God's blessings and move on without stopping to say thank You?

We can be so quick to move to the next thing.

Maybe today, stop.

Look back.

Notice.

Thank Him.

16. John 6:11

Before feeding the crowd, Jesus took the loaves and gave thanks.

Think about that.

There wasn't enough food for everyone.

And yet Jesus gave thanks before the miracle unfolded.

That's a beautiful picture of trust.

Sometimes we want to wait until we see the provision before we thank God.

Jesus shows us another way.

We can thank God while we're still waiting.

17. Acts 27:35

Before eating during a difficult journey, Paul gave thanks to God.

The circumstances were not easy.

There was danger.

Uncertainty.

Fear.

And yet Paul gave thanks.

This reminds us that gratitude isn't reserved for peaceful seasons.

It can become an anchor when everything around us feels uncertain.

18. Romans 1:21

Paul describes people who:

“did not honor him as God or give thanks to him.”

This verse gives us the opposite picture.

When we refuse gratitude, we can slowly become less aware of God.

Thankfulness helps us remember where our blessings come from.

It turns our attention back toward the Giver.

19. 1 Corinthians 15:57

“But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Our greatest reason for gratitude is Jesus.

Because of Him, sin and death do not have the final word.

Our hope isn't based on circumstances.

Our hope is rooted in Christ.

And that gives us something to be thankful for every single day.

20. 2 Corinthians 9:15

“Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!”

What is God's greatest gift?

Jesus.

We could spend a lifetime thanking God for Him and never exhaust the reason for our gratitude.

When everything else feels uncertain, this remains true:

Jesus came.

Jesus died for us.

Jesus rose again.

And through Him, we have hope.

21. Ephesians 5:20

“Giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Always.

Again, that's a challenging word.

But Paul isn't asking us to pretend everything is good.

He's teaching us to develop a heart that continually turns toward God.

Thankfulness becomes a posture.

A way of seeing.

A habit of remembering.

22. Philippians 4:6

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”

Notice that thanksgiving is right in the middle of prayer.

We bring our requests.

We bring our worries.

We bring our needs.

But we also bring thanksgiving.

Maybe that's the practice you need today.

Before you tell God what you're worried about, tell Him what you're thankful for.

Then bring the worry.

23. Colossians 3:15

“And be thankful.”

Three simple words.

And yet they can become a daily reminder.

Be thankful.

Not because life is always easy.

Because God is always worthy.

24. Colossians 3:17

“And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

This takes thankfulness beyond a quiet time.

It becomes part of everyday life.

The way we work.

The way we serve.

The way we speak.

The way we interact with others.

Thankfulness can shape all of it.

25. Colossians 4:2

“Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving.”

I love the connection between prayer and thanksgiving.

Keep praying.

Keep watching.

Keep thanking.

Even when the answer hasn't come yet.

26. 1 Thessalonians 5:18

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

This doesn't say to give thanks for all circumstances.

It says in all circumstances.

That's an important difference.

We don't have to call painful things good.

But we can look for God's goodness in the middle of them.

We can thank Him for His presence.

His faithfulness.

His promises.

His grace.

27. 1 Timothy 4:4

“For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving.”

There is something beautiful about learning to receive God's gifts with gratitude.

The ordinary things.

Food.

Rest.

Friendship.

Creation.

Family.

A warm home.

A quiet morning.

We don't have to wait for extraordinary blessings to become thankful people.

28. Hebrews 12:28

“Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken.”

Everything around us can change.

Plans change.

People change.

Circumstances change.

But God's kingdom cannot be shaken.

That gives us a firm place to stand.

29. James 1:17

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights.”

Every good gift comes from God.

Take a look around your life.

What good gifts have you received?

Who has God placed in your life?

What opportunities has He given you?

What small blessings have you overlooked?

Thank Him.

30. Revelation 7:12

“Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”

The Bible begins with God's creation and redemption story.

And it ends with worship.

Thanksgiving.

Praise.

Honor.

God is worthy.

And He will always be worthy.

What These Verses Teach Us About Thankfulness

After reading these Scriptures, something becomes clear.

Thankfulness is more than saying “thank you” when something good happens.

It is a way of seeing.

It is a way of remembering.

It is a way of turning our hearts toward God.

The Psalms teach us to remember His goodness.

Jesus shows us how to give thanks even before we see the answer.

Paul reminds us to bring thanksgiving into our prayers.

And Scripture continually points us back to the greatest reason for gratitude:

Jesus.

So what would happen if we practiced thankfulness intentionally?

What if we started looking for God's goodness instead of waiting for something big to happen?

What if we wrote down the blessings we usually overlook?

What if we thanked God in the middle of the waiting?

What if gratitude became part of the way we walked through ordinary days?

I think our perspective would begin to change.

Not because our circumstances would suddenly become perfect.

But because our eyes would become more accustomed to seeing God's faithfulness.

Start a Thankfulness Journal

You don't need a complicated gratitude routine.

Grab a notebook.

At the end of each day, write down three things you're thankful for.

They can be big.

They can be small.

They can be ordinary.

Maybe you're thankful for a friend who called.

A meal you enjoyed.

A Scripture that encouraged you.

A prayer that was answered.

A moment of laughter.

A quiet morning.

A lesson you learned.

God's protection.

His patience.

His forgiveness.

His presence.

Then take a moment to thank Him.

Over time, you'll have a collection of reminders.

And on the days when gratitude feels difficult, you can look back and remember:

God has been faithful.

When Thankfulness Feels Difficult

There may be seasons when gratitude feels almost impossible.

If that's where you are, I want to encourage you not to force yourself to pretend.

God can handle your honest heart.

You can say:

“Lord, I'm struggling to be thankful today.”

Then start small.

Thank Him for one thing.

Maybe it's simply:

“Thank You for being with me.”

That's enough.

Maybe:

“Thank You for giving me another day.”

Or:

“Thank You for Jesus.”

Sometimes we don't need to find ten reasons to be grateful.

We simply need to find one.

And then another tomorrow.

Gratitude grows slowly.

One reminder at a time.

A Simple Prayer of Thanksgiving

Lord,

Thank You.

Sometimes I say those words quickly without stopping to think about how much I have to be thankful for.

Forgive me for the times I focus so much on what I don't have that I forget to notice what You have already given me.

Thank You for Your faithfulness.

Thank You for Your mercy.

Thank You for Your patience.

Thank You for the people You have placed in my life.

Thank You for the ordinary blessings I sometimes overlook.

Thank You for carrying me through seasons I didn't think I could handle.

Thank You for answering prayers.

And thank You for the prayers that are still waiting for an answer.

Most of all, thank You for Jesus.

Help me become a woman who notices Your goodness.

Teach me to give thanks in every season.

When life is joyful, help me remember You.

When life is difficult, help me remember You.

When I am waiting, help me remember You.

Let gratitude become part of the way I live.

In Jesus' name,

Amen.

One Small Gratitude Practice

If you want to begin today, here's something simple.

Before you go to bed tonight, write down three things:

One thing God provided.

One thing God taught you.

One thing you want to thank Him for.

Then pray.

That's it.

Tomorrow, do it again.

Over time, you'll begin to notice something.

You may start seeing blessings you used to overlook.

You may begin remembering God's faithfulness more quickly.

You may find yourself thanking Him in the middle of ordinary moments.

That's the beauty of gratitude.

It doesn't always change the circumstances.

But it can change what we're looking at.

And sometimes that's exactly where God begins to change our hearts.

One blessing.

One Scripture.

One prayer.

One day at a time.

Because when we begin to count our blessings, we often discover that God's faithfulness has been surrounding us all along.

So today, pause.

Look around.

What is one thing you can thank God for?

Write it down.

Say it out loud.

And let your heart remember:

God is good.
