What are birthrights in the Bible?
The birthright (bekorah) has to do with both position and inheritance. By birthright, the firstborn son inherited the leadership of the family and the judicial authority of his father. Deuteronomy 21:17 states that he was also entitled to a double portion of the paternal inheritance.
What is the biblical definition of a blessing?
Well, that is a favor or gift bestowed by God, thereby bringing happiness. the invoking of God's favor upon a person:
Hi everyone, I’m Tammy Becker and welcome to the Almighty God and Gospel Girl Podcast. This week’s reading is Genesis chapters 22 through 42, the entire chapters. From those chapters this week I will be focusing on the topic of birthrights and blessings and will quickly note out some key points and Scriptures for your rabbit trails this week. For links, graphics and other things mentioned in this podcast, please visit the corresponding webpage at youministries.com
Birthrights-
How is birthright related to God?
Instead of coming from our human parents, our birthright comes directly from our God. Our divine Father and Mother. And instead of being in material possessions, our inheritance lies essentially in an identity from Him - one that is all good, that is inseparable from all that God is. And that includes all that He has.
What is the difference between birthright and inheritance?
As nouns the difference between inheritance and birthright
is that inheritance is the passing of title to an estate upon death while birthright is something owed since birth, due to inheritance.
What are the benefits of the birthright in the Bible?
The birthright son was entitled to a double portion (that is, twice as much as any other son) of the father's inheritance—one portion as a son, the second portion as the new head responsible for the family (see Gen. 48:22; Deut. 21:17), including the care of his mother and unmarried sisters.
Why did Jacob ask for Esau's birthright?
Jacob desired the birthright because it was more than material wealth. It had godly benefits and responsibilities. Jacob knew his brother was not interested in the things of God. It was wasted on him.
Why did Esau despise his birthright?
Contrary to what people believe, Esau despised his birthright because God had proclaimed that his birthright equaled death. God gave favor to Jacob, who was the youngest.
God favored Jacob because Jacob valued the favor of God more than Esau did. He valued the favor of God as it was symbolized in the double portion inherited by the firstborn, and he valued the favor of God as it was irrevocably released through the prophetic words of blessing spoken by his father.
In the scriptures, birthright usually refers to the right of the son born first in a family to inherit his father's possessions and authority. ... To assist Him in this work, the Savior has appointed one family lineage to hold His priesthood and share the blessings of His gospel with the rest of Heavenly Father's children.
What is the blessing of the firstborn?
Hebrew Bible-
According to the Law of Moses, the firstborn may be either the firstborn of his father, who is entitled to receive a double portion of his father's inheritance (compared to the other siblings), (Deuteronomy 21:17) or the firstborn of his mother.
Now that we have a better understanding of birthrights and blessings let's take a look at this week's chapter readings and how that affected Esau and Jacob.
In Genesis 25:34, rabbit trail, Esau gives up his birthright, for food…why do you think he would do this? Birthright as we have learned is huge, and did he simply disregard this? This is part of your discovery for this lesson, part one of your rabbit trail for this week.
We now know that Esau was the twin born first and then Jacob to Isaac and Rebekah. In Genesis 27:2 we see that Isaac now and old man wants to pronounce the blessing to Esau, and Rebekah overhears and plots with Jacob to steal Esau’s blessing, for the second time. Note: Look up what Jacob’s name means on the Blue Letter Bible.
Genesis 27: 36 Isaac was now 137 years old, and it was time to give his blessings to Esau and Jacob, note, if you deep dive at the age of Isaac and when Esau and Jacob were born, the time this blessing takes place in their lives, these brothers would have been around 60 years old, not just young men anymore. Do the math yourself…what do you come up with?
Side notes to discover on your own, Esau and Jacob were not Isaac’s first-born sons, so why were Isaac’s others son’s disregarded in consideration for inheritance or birthright?

Rabbit Trails for This Week:
Some other great Scripture for Rabbit trails in this week’s readings worth mentioning and further investigation are the following:
- What is the supernatural event in Genesis 26:12 and how can you explain it?
- Full circle? See Genesis 29:25
- Add these numbers carefully, it is not what you may have previously thought. Genesis 29:28
- Who does Jacob go to for his problems? Genesis 32:12
- God appears as man; Genesis 32:24; side note see these other scriptures; Genesis 16:9-13, 17:1, 18:1-33

We, as believers, have got to train ourselves not to treat our Father as a last resort if we want Him to be our first line of defense.
If we want God to be our first line of defense, then we have got to stop treating Him like our last resort.
For each of us, stepping into the will of the Father can be as simple as that first turn and facing the truth of our Father.
When you’re wrestling with something, wrestle it out with YHWH. He can take it.
And when you are done, you will be blessed for it and your faith strengthened as a result, just as Jacob/Israel was.
Wrestling with YHWH – meeting Him head on and not letting go until he was blessed through the encounter- changed Jacob’s identity.
I can not tell you how many times in my life that I have literally argued with God in my head knowing full well that I would do what He wanted me to do in the end, because like so many times before I learned a great lesson that at the end of obedience there is always a blessing, and I’m not talking about for me in a physical sense, but if I do not obey others could miss their blessing by what I was suppose to do, and therefore when they receive their blessing it blesses my heart in return.
DISCLAIMER:
This study is in no way to take the place of studying the entire Bible in fact if you haven't studied the entire Bible from book to book, cover to cover I suggest doing that first before you dive into this study. This study is a study, an investigative deep dive if you will, for those of you that have read the Bible and Studied God’s Word cover to cover and want to do a little more deep diving into some “rabbit trails” in the Bible.
I will be providing questions, scriptures, and points of interest, if you will, that you can look up on your own, investigate, and deep dive asking God to help you discern and come to your thoughts. In no way am I trying to influence you one way or another period! My entire goal of doing this series this year is so that you get into your Bibles even more and discover all the treasures that God has placed there for us.
You will hear me mention over and over on my podcasts, don’t take my word for it, get in your Bible, and look it up yourself! I challenge you to challenge me and find the answers for yourself. That’s right, I will bring you a message, I will back it up with scripture, I will give you prompts I will put some questions out there that will make you go or I never thought of that or wow that's something new…but, let me make this very clear….it is your job, that’s right, your job to be in Yahweh’s Word daily.
