Why the Names of Jesus Matter

emmanuel jesus name light of the world mighty god prince of peace Jun 29, 2026

Let’s slow down for a moment.

In Scripture, names are never random.

They carry meaning.

Identity.

Purpose.

And when it comes to Jesus, His names reveal the fullness of who He is.

Isaiah 9:6 says:

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given… and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

Before Jesus ever walked the earth, His identity was already being revealed through promise.

Through prophecy.

Through hope.

And when He came, those names were no longer just descriptions on a page.

They became lived reality.

Flesh and blood.

God with us.

So as we walk through this Christmas study together, we’re not just learning names.

We’re learning how Jesus meets us in every part of our lives.

🌿 Emmanuel — God With Us

One of the most tender names of Jesus is found in Matthew 1:23:

“They shall call his name Emmanuel (which means, God with us).”

Let’s sit with that for a moment.

God with us.

Not God distant.

Not God watching from afar.

Not God waiting for us to figure everything out.

But God with us.

In the ordinary.

In the messy.

In the joyful moments.

In the painful ones too.

I don’t know about you, but there are seasons when I need that reminder more than anything else.

That I am not walking alone.

That God has not stepped back.

That He is present even when I don’t feel Him.

Christmas begins here.

With presence.

With closeness.

With a God who chose to enter our world, not because we had it all together, but because we didn’t.

Wonderful Counselor — When We Don’t Know What to Do

Isaiah 9:6 continues with this beautiful name:

“Wonderful Counselor.”

A counselor brings wisdom.

Guidance.

Direction.

And Jesus doesn’t offer advice from a distance.

He walks with us through every decision, every uncertainty, every season of waiting.

Let’s be honest.

There are moments when we don’t know what to do next.

Which direction to take.

Which door to walk through.

Which prayer to pray.

And in those moments, we often feel pressure to figure it out quickly.

But Jesus invites us into something different.

Not rushing.

Not striving.

But coming to Him.

“What if,” He gently asks, “you let Me guide you?”

This is what makes His counsel wonderful.

It is not rushed.

It is not harsh.

It is not confusing.

It is steady.

Peaceful.

Rooted in love.

🕊️ Prince of Peace — When Life Feels Heavy

Another name from Isaiah 9:6 is:

Prince of Peace.

Let’s slow down here.

Because peace is something many of us are searching for.

Not just quiet moments.

But deep soul peace.

The kind that holds us steady when life doesn’t make sense.

The kind that doesn’t depend on circumstances.

The kind that remains even when everything else feels uncertain.

Jesus doesn’t just give peace.

He is peace.

John 14:27 reminds us:

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.”

Notice what He says.

Not the peace the world gives.

Not temporary relief.

But His peace.

The same peace that carried Him through every storm.

The same peace that anchored Him in every moment of His earthly ministry.

And that same peace is available to us today.

Not as something we earn.

But as something we receive.

🐑 Lamb of God — The Heart of Christmas

John the Baptist introduces Jesus with these words in John 1:29:

“Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”

This name brings us to the very center of the Christmas story.

Jesus didn’t come only to be admired.

He came to rescue.

To restore.

To redeem.

The Lamb of God speaks of sacrifice.

Of love that gives.

Of grace that reaches further than we could ever imagine.

And here’s what stands out to me every time I read this:

Jesus came knowing exactly what it would cost Him.

Christmas was never disconnected from the cross.

From the very beginning, His mission was love.

A love that would go all the way.

A love that would not stop.

A love that would give everything.

That’s the heart of Christmas.

Not just a baby in a manger.

But a Savior with purpose.

💡 Light of the World — When Things Feel Dark

Jesus says in John 8:12:

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Let’s pause here.

Because darkness doesn’t always look dramatic.

Sometimes it looks like confusion.

Sometimes it looks like waiting.

Sometimes it looks like not knowing what comes next.

Sometimes it looks like simply feeling overwhelmed.

But Jesus steps into all of that and says:

“I am the Light.”

Not a temporary light.

Not a flicker that fades.

But the Light that reveals truth.

The Light that guides.

The Light that never goes out.

Christmas reminds us of this beautifully.

That light came into the world.

And darkness did not overcome it.

🦁 Mighty God — When We Need Strength

Isaiah also calls Him:

Mighty God.

There are seasons when we don’t just need comfort.

We need strength.

We need help beyond our own ability.

We need a God who is not limited by what we are limited by.

This name reminds us that Jesus is not only gentle.

He is also powerful.

Strong enough to hold what we cannot.

Strong enough to carry what feels too heavy.

Strong enough to work in places we thought were impossible.

And yet, He uses that strength not to intimidate us… but to uphold us.

🌿 What These Names Reveal About Jesus

When we put all of these names together, we begin to see something beautiful.

Emmanuel — God with us
Wonderful Counselor — God guiding us
Prince of Peace — God calming us
Lamb of God — God saving us
Light of the World — God leading us
Mighty God — God strengthening us

Each name reveals a different aspect of His heart.

And together, they remind us of something we often forget:

Jesus is everything we need.

Not just in Christmas season.

But in every season.

🎄 A Christmas Invitation to Slow Down

Friend, one of the quiet dangers of Christmas is rushing past the very One we are celebrating.

We decorate.

We prepare.

We attend.

We give.

But sometimes we forget to pause and simply behold Him.

This study is an invitation to slow down.

To sit with His names.

To reflect on who He is.

And to let your heart be shaped again by His presence.

Because Christmas is not just a story we remember.

It is a reality we live in.

God is with us.

Still.

Now.

Today.

✍️ Reflection Questions

Take a few moments to reflect:

  • Which name of Jesus speaks most deeply to my current season?
  • Where do I need to experience Jesus as Emmanuel in my life right now?
  • Am I inviting Him as Counselor into my daily decisions?
  • Where do I need His peace or His strength today?
  • How can I slow down this Christmas season to truly behold Jesus?

🙏 Prayer

Father,

Thank You for the gift of Jesus.

Thank You that through His names, we see Your heart revealed to us.

Help us not rush through this season without pausing to know Him more deeply.

Teach us to see Jesus as Emmanuel, Prince of Peace, Wonderful Counselor, Lamb of God, Light of the World, and Mighty God.

In every place we feel uncertain, remind us of who He is.

In every place we feel weary, strengthen our hearts.

In every place we feel distracted, draw us back to You.

May this Christmas be more than tradition.

May it be encounter.

A deeper awareness of Your presence.

A deeper love for Your Son.

A deeper joy in Your salvation.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

🎄 A Gentle Closing

Friend, as you move through this Christmas season, I pray you don’t just see decorations and celebrations.

I pray you see Jesus.

In His fullness.

In His beauty.

In His nearness.

Because every name tells the same story.

He came.

He is with us.

And He is everything we need.

One name at a time.
One moment at a time.
One quiet step closer to Him.
