When Your Quiet Time Feels Dry

bible journaling devotional prayer life quiet time spiritual growth Jun 29, 2026

Let’s slow this down for a moment.

There are times when our quiet time feels rich and life-giving.

And then there are times when it feels like we’re just going through the motions.

We open our Bible… but our mind is elsewhere.

We pray… but our words feel thin.

We sit in silence… but it feels more like distraction than connection.

If you’ve ever felt that, you are not alone.

Even David wrote seasons of spiritual dryness in the Psalms:

“My soul thirsts for You, my whole being longs for You…” — Psalm 63:1

Notice what he doesn’t say.

He doesn’t say he has it all together.

He says he is thirsty.

And that’s often where renewal begins.

Not in fullness.

But in awareness of need.

God Meets Us in Simple Returns

Let’s be honest.

Sometimes we overcomplicate quiet time.

We think we need the perfect plan.

The perfect space.

The perfect level of focus.

But what if refreshing your quiet time is less about doing more…

And more about returning simply?

Jesus gives us this gentle invitation in Matthew 11:28:

“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Not come once you’ve fixed your routine.

Not come when you feel spiritually strong again.

Just come.

That word changes everything.

Because it means access is not earned.

It is received.

🌼 A Gentle Way to Refresh Your Quiet Time

Let’s walk through this slowly, together.

Not as a checklist.

But as an invitation back into rhythm.

  1. Start Smaller, Not Harder

One of the kindest things you can do for your quiet time is simplify it.

Instead of trying to “get back to where you were,” start with what feels possible today.

Maybe:

  • One verse
  • One short prayer
  • Five minutes of stillness

Zechariah 4:10 reminds us:

“Do not despise these small beginnings…”

Small is not insignificant.

Small is often where God rebuilds consistency.

  1. Return to Familiar Scripture

There is something grounding about returning to passages you already know.

Psalm 23.

Psalm 46.

John 15.

Matthew 6.

Let the Word feel like home again.

Not pressure.

Just presence.

Ask:

  • What stands out to me today?
  • What is God reminding me of right now?
  1. Let Prayer Be Honest Again

Sometimes dryness in our quiet time is not about lack of discipline.

It’s about lack of honesty.

So instead of polished prayers, try simple ones like:

“God, I feel distant today. But I’m here.”

Or:

“Lord, help me want You again.”

Romans 8:26 reminds us that even when words are weak, the Spirit helps us.

You are not praying alone.

🌿 When Distraction Feels Strong

Let’s talk about something real.

Distraction is often the biggest barrier in quiet time.

Your phone.

Your thoughts.

Your schedule.

Your fatigue.

And sometimes, we interpret distraction as failure.

But what if it’s simply an invitation to gently return?

Not to shame yourself.

But to refocus.

Again and again if needed.

Psalm 46:10 says:

“Be still, and know that I am God.”

Stillness is not something we force.

It’s something we practice returning to.

Creating a Summer Rhythm with God

Summer doesn’t have to mean spiritual inconsistency.

It can actually become an invitation to slower, simpler connection with God.

Try this rhythm:

  • Morning: one verse + short prayer
  • Midday: pause and breathe a simple prayer
  • Evening: gratitude reflection

It doesn’t need to be complicated to be meaningful.

Consistency grows in simplicity.

🌼 What This Season Might Be Teaching You

Sometimes we assume dry seasons are something to fix.

But often, they are something to notice.

Maybe God is teaching you:

  • To slow down
  • To release pressure
  • To rediscover simplicity
  • To return to dependence

Deuteronomy 8:3 says:

“Man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.”

Not occasional words.

Not rushed words.

But daily bread.

🌿 When You Feel Like You’re Starting Over

There’s a gentle lie many of us believe:

“If I’ve been inconsistent, I have to start all over.”

But in God’s eyes, you are never starting from zero.

You are continuing with Him.

Even if your rhythm paused.

Even if your consistency wavered.

Lamentations 3:22–23 reminds us:

“His mercies are new every morning.”

That includes today.

Right now.

Reflection Questions

Take a quiet moment with these:

  • What has my quiet time with God looked like recently?
  • Where have I felt most distracted or distant?
  • What simple step could help me reconnect with God this week?
  • What does my heart need most right now—rest, focus, or renewal?
  • How is God gently inviting me back to Him today?

Write honestly.

No pressure.

Just presence.

🙏 Prayer

Father,

Thank You for meeting us in every season—even the ones that feel scattered or dry.

We admit that sometimes our quiet time has felt distant or inconsistent.

But You have not moved away from us.

Gently draw our hearts back to You.

Help us release pressure and return to simplicity.

Teach us to value small moments with You again.

One verse.

One prayer.

One quiet return at a time.

Renew our desire for Your Word.

Restore joy in Your presence.

And remind us that You are always near.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

🌿 A Gentle Invitation

Friend, refreshing your quiet time is not about rebuilding something perfect.

It’s about returning to Someone faithful.

You don’t have to catch up.

You don’t have to perform.

You simply get to come back.

And God meets you there.

Every time.
