When God Asks Us to Wait for the Harvest
Oct 19, 2026
There’s something about waiting that can make us question everything.
We plant.
We pray.
We water.
We keep showing up.
And then we wait.
But what happens when nothing seems to be growing?
Maybe you’ve been praying for something for months.
Maybe you’ve been faithful in a relationship, a ministry, your family, your work, or your walk with God, but you haven’t seen the fruit you hoped for.
You did what you knew to do.
You trusted God.
You planted the seed.
And now you’re wondering…
Where is the harvest?
I don’t know about you, but waiting can be one of the hardest parts of faith.
We want to see results.
We want to know that our prayers are making a difference.
We want reassurance that the seeds we’re planting today will actually become something beautiful tomorrow.
But sometimes God asks us to wait.
Not because He has forgotten us.
Not because nothing is happening.
But because some things simply take time.
And when we understand how God works through seasons, we can begin to see the waiting differently.
Seeds Don't Become Harvest Overnight
Think about a farmer.
A farmer doesn't plant a seed in the morning and dig it up that afternoon because nothing appears to be happening.
They know something we often forget.
Growth takes time.
The farmer plants the seed, waters the ground, watches the weather, and waits.
There is work happening beneath the surface long before anything becomes visible above it.
And isn't that often true in our spiritual lives?
We pray a prayer, but we don't see the answer.
We make a faithful decision, but we don't see the outcome.
We encourage someone, but we don't know what difference our words made.
We teach our children God's Word, but we don't immediately see the fruit.
We keep serving.
We keep giving.
We keep loving.
We keep trusting.
And sometimes, we wonder if any of it matters.
But here's what I've learned:
Just because you can't see growth doesn't mean God isn't growing something.
Some of God's most important work happens where we cannot see it.

“In Due Season We Will Reap”
Paul gives us a beautiful reminder in Galatians 6:9:
“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”
There’s a phrase here I want us to sit with.
In due season.
Not our season.
Not our preferred timeline.
Not when we decide the harvest should come.
Due season.
God knows the right time.
And that can be difficult for us because we live in a world that wants everything immediately.
We can order something today and have it delivered tomorrow.
We can send a message and expect an answer within minutes.
We can search for information instantly.
We are surrounded by convenience and speed.
But God doesn't always work that way.
Sometimes He asks us to wait.
Sometimes He allows the seed to remain underground.
Sometimes He invites us to keep watering something we cannot yet see.
And that waiting can become part of what He is doing in us.

What If the Waiting Is Doing Something in You?
Take a moment with me.
Think about something you've been waiting for.
Maybe you already know exactly what it is.
Maybe it's an answer to prayer.
Maybe it's healing in a relationship.
Maybe it's direction for your future.
Maybe it's financial provision.
Maybe it's a dream you've carried for years.
Maybe you're waiting to see the fruit of something you faithfully started.
Now ask yourself:
What might God be growing in me while I wait?
Because sometimes we become so focused on the harvest that we miss what is happening in the soil.
Waiting can teach us patience.
Waiting can deepen our trust.
Waiting can expose the places where we've been trying to control everything.
Waiting can teach us to depend on God instead of our timeline.
And sometimes, waiting prepares us for the very thing we've been asking God to give us.
We may want the harvest.
God may be preparing the person who will carry it.

God Sees What We Cannot See
There is something comforting about remembering that God sees the whole picture.
We see today.
God sees yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
We see the seed.
He sees the harvest.
We see the empty space.
He sees what is being formed.
We see delay.
He sees preparation.
That's why Proverbs 3:5–6 tells us:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”
Trust becomes especially important when we don't understand.
It's easy to say, “I trust God,” when everything is going according to plan.
But what about when the answer is taking longer than expected?
What about when the door hasn't opened?
What about when you've prayed the same prayer again and again?
That's where trust becomes personal.
We don't trust God because we understand everything.
We trust Him because we know His character.
God is faithful.
God is good.
God is not careless with our lives.
And even when we don't understand the timing, we can trust His heart.

Don't Dig Up the Seed
I've always loved the picture of a seed because it reminds us how easily we can interfere with God's process.
Imagine planting a seed and then becoming impatient.
You wait a few days.
Nothing.
So you dig it up to see if anything is happening.
But by digging it up, you interrupt the very process you're hoping will produce growth.
Sometimes we do something similar spiritually.
We pray for something.
We wait.
We become discouraged.
Then we start trying to force the outcome.
We make decisions out of fear.
We rush ahead.
We abandon something God asked us to be faithful in.
We decide the seed must have failed because we can't see anything happening.
But maybe the seed is doing exactly what seeds do.
Growing beneath the surface.
Maybe your job isn't to keep digging it up.
Maybe your job is simply to keep trusting God.
Keep watering.
Keep praying.
Keep obeying.
Keep showing up.
And leave the growth to Him.

There Is a Difference Between Waiting and Doing Nothing
Now, waiting doesn't mean sitting around doing absolutely nothing.
Biblical waiting is active.
It's trusting while continuing to walk with God.
Isaiah 40:31 says:
“But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength.”
Waiting on God can look like continuing to pray.
Continuing to serve.
Continuing to love.
Continuing to read His Word.
Continuing to make wise decisions.
Continuing to be faithful in the little things.
You may not see the harvest yet.
But you can still tend the field.
There are things God has placed in your hands today.
Take care of those things.
Be faithful with today.
You don't have to manufacture tomorrow's harvest.
You simply need to be faithful with today's seed.
Sometimes We Want the Harvest More Than We Want God
This is a difficult question, but it's worth asking.
What if God is teaching us to want Him more than the answer?
It's easy to become so focused on what we're asking God to do that we forget to enjoy being with God.
We can become consumed with the harvest.
When will it happen?
How will it happen?
What if it doesn't happen?
Why is it taking so long?
And suddenly, our prayer life becomes more about getting an answer than knowing the One we're praying to.
But God invites us into something deeper.
Relationship.
Presence.
Trust.
He wants our hearts, not just our requests.
Maybe the waiting season isn't simply about preparing you for the blessing.
Maybe it's about teaching you that God Himself is the blessing.
That's a beautiful lesson.
And sometimes it's one we can only learn slowly.

What Are You Planting Today?
Let's make this practical.
What seeds are you planting right now?
Maybe it's the seed of prayer.
Maybe it's kindness.
Maybe it's generosity.
Maybe it's time spent in God's Word.
Maybe you're investing in your children.
Maybe you're building something that God has placed on your heart.
Maybe you're choosing forgiveness.
Maybe you're learning to speak words of encouragement instead of criticism.
Maybe you're simply trying to become more faithful in the quiet places nobody sees.
Don't underestimate small seeds.
Jesus often used small things to teach us about God's kingdom.
A mustard seed.
A handful of loaves.
A cup of cold water.
A little boy's lunch.
God is not limited by the size of what you have.
He is looking at your willingness to place it in His hands.
You may not see the harvest today.
But that doesn't mean today's obedience is wasted.

The Quiet Work Still Counts
Sometimes we think only visible results matter.
If we can't point to something and say, “Look what God did!”, we assume nothing happened.
But heaven sees things we don't.
The prayer nobody heard.
The kindness nobody noticed.
The sacrifice nobody thanked you for.
The decision to forgive.
The morning you opened your Bible even though you didn't feel like it.
The moment you chose faith instead of fear.
The time you encouraged someone who was struggling.
The seed you planted when you had no guarantee of what would happen next.
None of that is wasted.
God sees it all.
And here's something I want to encourage you with today:
You don't have to see the fruit to be faithful.
Your job is faithfulness.
God's job is the harvest.

Learning to Notice the Little Things
While we're waiting for the big harvest, let's not overlook the little signs of God's goodness.
Maybe your circumstances haven't changed, but your heart has.
Maybe you're not where you want to be, but you're not where you used to be either.
Maybe the situation is still difficult, but you're learning to respond differently.
Maybe you still have questions, but you're worrying a little less.
Maybe you're beginning to recognize God's presence in places where you used to feel alone.
Those things matter.
Growth isn't always dramatic.
Sometimes it's quiet.
Sometimes it's gradual.
Sometimes you only recognize it when you look back.
That's why gratitude can be such an important practice during a waiting season.
Gratitude helps us notice what is already growing.
A Few Questions to Sit With
Take a moment with me today.
Find a quiet place if you can.
Open your Bible to Galatians 6:9 and read it slowly.
Then spend some time with these questions:
- What am I currently waiting for God to do?
- Have I become discouraged because I cannot see the results yet?
- What might God be growing in me during this waiting season?
- What seed has God placed in my hands today?
- Where have I already seen small evidence of His faithfulness?
- What would it look like for me to trust God's timing instead of trying to force the outcome?
- Is God inviting me to focus more on Him than on the harvest?
You don't have to answer everything perfectly.
Just be honest with God.
He already knows your heart.
A Prayer for the Waiting Season
Father,
Waiting is hard.
You know that.
You know the things I've been praying about.
You know the dreams I've carried.
You know the seeds I've planted and the moments when I've wondered if anything is happening at all.
Help me trust You when I cannot see the harvest.
Help me remember that silence does not mean You are absent.
Teach me to be faithful in the little things.
Give me patience when I want to rush ahead.
Give me courage when I feel like giving up.
Help me notice the small ways You are already working.
And when I cannot see what is happening beneath the surface, help me trust that You are still at work.
Thank You for being faithful.
Thank You for caring about every detail.
Thank You for reminding me that my job is to trust and obey, while You take care of the growth.
Help me wait well.
Help me keep planting.
Help me keep believing.
And help me remember that Your timing is always worth trusting.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
Your Waiting Season Is Not Wasted
If you're waiting for a harvest right now, I want you to hear this gently:
Don't give up just because you can't see anything yet.
The seed may be hidden.
The roots may be growing.
The soil may be changing.
God may be doing work you cannot see.
And perhaps one day you'll look back and realize that while you were waiting for God to change your circumstances, He was changing you.
He was strengthening your faith.
Deepening your roots.
Teaching you patience.
Drawing you closer to Jesus.
Preparing you for what comes next.
So keep going.
Keep praying.
Keep planting.
Keep trusting.
And don't forget to look for the little blessings along the way.
Because sometimes the harvest isn't the only evidence that God is faithful.
Sometimes the evidence is simply that He has been with you through every season.
A Simple Way to Practice Gratitude While You Wait
If waiting has left you focused on what hasn't happened yet, I want to invite you to try something simple.
Instead of asking only, “God, when will this happen?”, begin asking:
“God, what can I thank You for today?”
Not someday.
Not when the prayer is answered.
Today.
Maybe it's a quiet morning.
A conversation with someone you love.
A meal.
A Scripture verse that encouraged you.
A small provision.
A moment of peace.
A lesson God is teaching you.
A new strength you didn't have before.
Those little things are worth noticing.
That's why I want to invite you to download our free Count Your Blessings Mini Challenge.
It's a simple way to slow down, notice God's goodness, and practice gratitude even while you're still waiting for the bigger things you're praying for.
Because the waiting season doesn't mean there is nothing to celebrate.
God is still faithful here.
Right here.
Right now.
And one day, when the harvest comes, you'll be able to look back and see what you couldn't see while you were waiting.
The roots.
The growth.
The faithfulness.
The grace.
And you'll realize that God was working all along.
So don't dig up the seed.
Don't give up too soon.
Keep trusting the Gardener.
If you love creating intentional spaces to slow down, reflect, and connect with God, I also want to invite you to learn more about Whispers of Autumn.
In due season, we will reap.
And until then, let's keep planting faithfully, walking closely with Jesus, and thanking God for the blessings He has already placed in our hands.
