What Bible Journaling Really Is
Jun 29, 2026
Let’s slow this down for a moment.
Bible journaling is not about making something beautiful to show others.
It’s about making space to notice what God is saying to you.
It can be simple.
Very simple.
It might look like:
- Writing a verse in your own words
- Highlighting a phrase that stands out
- Writing a short prayer in the margin
- Noting what you feel God is highlighting
Psalm 119:105 says:
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
Bible journaling is simply learning to pause long enough to see that light more clearly.
✨ You Don’t Need to Be an Artist
Let’s gently release something here.
You do not need perfect handwriting.
You do not need creative lettering.
You do not need stickers or supplies to begin.
Sometimes we hesitate because we think we need to “do it right.”
But Bible journaling isn’t about performance.
It’s about relationship.
It’s about slowing down enough to notice God in His Word.
🌼 How to Start Bible Journaling Simply
Let’s walk through this step by step, gently.
Not overwhelming.
Just doable.
- Choose a Small Portion of Scripture
Start small.
One chapter.
Or even a few verses.
A few good places to begin:
- Psalm 23
- Matthew 6:25–34
- John 15
- Philippians 4:6–7
Ask yourself:
- What stands out to me?
- What feels like it’s speaking to my current season?
- Read Slowly, Not Quickly
This is where we often rush.
But Bible journaling invites us to slow down.
Read the passage once.
Then again.
Then pause.
Let a phrase settle in your heart.
Psalm 46:10 says:
“Be still, and know that I am God.”
Stillness is often where understanding begins.
- Respond on the Page
Now comes the journaling part.
You don’t need to write much.
Just respond honestly.
You might:
- Rewrite the verse in your own words
- Write what you feel God is saying
- Ask a question
- Write a simple prayer
For example:
“Lord, I don’t always feel at peace, but I want to trust You more in this area.”
That is Bible journaling.
Simple.
Honest.
Real.
- Highlight What Stands Out
If a phrase catches your attention, mark it.
Circle it.
Underline it.
Write it again in your journal.
Let the Word stay with you longer than just one reading.
Hebrews 4:12 reminds us:
“The word of God is living and active…”
It is not static.
It speaks.
Even in small moments.
🌿 When You Feel Like You’re Not Doing It Right
Let’s be honest.
One of the biggest barriers to Bible journaling is comparison.
Seeing others’ beautifully decorated pages.
Thinking you need to match that.
But your journal is not a display.
It is a conversation.
There is no “right way” to meet with God on a page.
Only your way.
And His invitation.
✨ What to Write When You Don’t Know What to Say
There will be days when you open your Bible and feel stuck.
That’s okay.
Try simple prompts like:
- “God, today I feel…”
- “What stands out to me is…”
- “Help me understand…”
- “I need You in this area…”
Even silence on the page is still presence.
Romans 8:26 reminds us that the Spirit helps us in our weakness.
You are not journaling alone.
🌼 Building a Gentle Rhythm
Bible journaling does not have to happen every day for it to be meaningful.
Start small:
- 2–3 times a week
- 10–15 minutes
- One passage at a time
Consistency matters more than quantity.
Over time, this rhythm becomes a place you return to—not out of obligation, but desire.
🌿 What Bible Journaling Does in Your Heart
As you continue this practice, something quiet begins to shift.
You start to notice God more in everyday life.
You remember Scripture more easily.
You reflect instead of rush.
You listen instead of just read.
And slowly, your faith becomes more rooted.
Not because of the pages.
But because of the presence you’ve learned to recognize there.
✨ Simple Supplies to Get Started
You really don’t need much.
Just:
- A Bible
- A notebook or journal Bible
- A pen or highlighter
Optional:
- Sticky notes
- Colored pens
- Washi tape (if you enjoy creativity)
But remember:
The most important tool is your willingness.
🌼 Reflection Questions
Take a quiet moment with these:
- What do I hope to experience through Bible journaling?
- Where do I feel God inviting me to slow down?
- What has kept me from starting before now?
- What is one small step I can take this week?
- How do I usually respond when I read Scripture?
🙏 Prayer
Father,
Thank You for giving us Your Word.
Thank You that You speak to us in personal and gentle ways.
As we begin or return to Bible journaling, help us release pressure and comparison.
Teach us to slow down.
To listen.
To reflect.
And to respond to You with honest hearts.
Let Your Word come alive to us in new ways.
Not as information alone.
But as relationship.
Guide our thoughts, our hands, and our hearts as we spend time with You.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
🌿 A Gentle Invitation
Friend, Bible journaling doesn’t have to be complicated to be meaningful.
You don’t need perfect pages.
You just need a willing heart.
One verse.
One moment.
One honest response at a time.
And over time, those quiet pages become a record of God’s faithfulness in your life.
