Slowing Down Enough to Hear God's Voice
Sep 12, 2026
There are days when life feels like it's moving faster than I can keep up.
The alarm goes off, and before my feet even touch the floor, my mind is already racing. There are appointments to remember, emails to answer, people to care for, meals to prepare, and a list of responsibilities that seems to grow longer every time I look at it.
Maybe you know that feeling too.
Sometimes we become so focused on getting through the day that we forget to pause and ask the One who already knows how the day should unfold.
I don't think any of us intentionally choose a hurried life.
It just happens.
One commitment leads to another.
One distraction becomes ten more.
Before we realize it, the noise around us has become so constant that we struggle to recognize the gentle voice of God.
But here's what I've been learning.
God isn't usually competing with the noise.
He's inviting us into the quiet.
Not because He has less to say.
But because our hearts often hear Him best when we've slowed down enough to listen.
Let's Slow This Down for a Moment
One of my favorite stories in the Old Testament is found in the life of Elijah.
After experiencing fear, exhaustion, and deep discouragement, Elijah found himself standing on a mountain, waiting for the Lord to pass by.
Scripture tells us there was a powerful wind.
Then an earthquake.
Then a fire.
But God wasn't in any of those dramatic displays.
Instead, Elijah heard "the sound of a low whisper." (1 Kings 19:11–12, ESV)
Take a moment with me.
Imagine standing where Elijah stood.
The wind has stopped.
The ground is still.
The fire has faded.
And in the quiet, God speaks.
What does this reveal about God?
It reminds us that God often meets us in ways we don't expect.
Not through constant noise.
Not through endless activity.
But through His gentle presence.
Sometimes we've been looking for something dramatic, while God has been inviting us to simply slow down and listen.

God's Voice Will Never Contradict His Word
When we talk about hearing God's voice, it's important to remember where He has already spoken clearly.
Through Scripture.
The Bible is God's living Word.
It reveals His character.
His promises.
His wisdom.
His love.
Every impression we have, every prompting we sense, every decision we make should be measured against what God has already revealed in His Word.
That's why spending time in Scripture is so important.
We're not waiting for a new message when we've neglected the One He's already given us.
As we become familiar with God's Word, we begin recognizing His heart more clearly.
His voice becomes familiar because we've spent time listening to Him through Scripture.
Noise Isn't Always Loud
When I think about distractions, I don't just think about sound.
Sometimes the loudest noise is happening inside our own minds.
Worry.
Fear.
Regret.
Planning.
Overthinking.
Comparison.
Those thoughts can become so constant that they leave very little room for quiet reflection.
Have you ever noticed that?
You sit down to pray, and suddenly your mind remembers everything you forgot to do.
Or you begin reading Scripture, and your thoughts wander to tomorrow's schedule.
We've all been there.
Instead of becoming discouraged, we can simply return our attention to the Lord.
Again and again.
He is patient.
He isn't frustrated by our wandering minds.
Like a loving Father, He gently invites us back.

Jesus Often Chose Quiet Places
As I read through the Gospels, one pattern continues to stand out.
Jesus often withdrew to lonely places to pray.
Luke 5:16 tells us:
"But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray." (ESV)
Let's slow this down.
Jesus wasn't avoiding people.
He wasn't escaping responsibility.
He was making room for relationship with His Father.
If anyone understood the demands of a busy life, it was Jesus.
Crowds followed Him.
People needed Him.
There was always more ministry to do.
Yet He intentionally stepped away to spend time alone with the Father.
That challenges me.
Because if Jesus needed those quiet moments, how much more do I?
Slowing Down Doesn't Mean Doing Nothing
Sometimes we hear the words "slow down" and imagine stopping everything.
But that's not always possible.
Life continues.
Responsibilities remain.
Families still need us.
Work still needs to be done.
Slowing down isn't necessarily about doing less.
It's about becoming more aware of God's presence in what we're already doing.
You can pray while washing dishes.
You can thank God during your morning walk.
You can meditate on Scripture while driving to work.
You can whisper a prayer while folding laundry.
The goal isn't escaping everyday life.
The goal is inviting Jesus into it.

Learning to Listen
Listening is a skill we develop.
The more time we spend with someone, the more familiar their voice becomes.
The same is true with God.
We begin recognizing His heart because we've spent time with Him.
Not just talking.
Listening.
Reading His Word.
Reflecting.
Waiting quietly.
Sometimes we expect every prayer time to include a dramatic moment.
Most of the time, it doesn't.
Often, what God gives us is something even better.
A quiet reminder from Scripture.
A renewed sense of peace.
A gentle conviction.
A fresh perspective.
A deeper awareness of His presence.
Those quiet moments often shape our lives far more than we realize.
What Does This Reveal About God's Character?
I love asking this question because it keeps bringing us back to who God is.
So what do we see here?
God is patient.
He doesn't rush us.
He welcomes us.
He speaks through His Word.
He gently leads rather than forcing.
He desires relationship more than religious performance.
He isn't looking for perfect prayers.
He's inviting honest hearts.
That's such a comforting truth.
Because it means every one of us can come to Him exactly as we are.
Creating Space for Quiet
You don't need hours of uninterrupted silence to hear from God.
Sometimes all it takes is a few intentional minutes.
Here are a few simple ideas to help create space:
- Begin your morning by reading one Psalm before checking your phone.
- Sit quietly for a few minutes after you finish praying instead of immediately moving to the next task.
- Keep a journal nearby to write down verses or thoughts that stand out.
- Take a short walk and thank God for what you notice around you.
- End your day by reading a few verses and asking God what He wants you to remember.
Simple rhythms often become lasting habits.
Take a Moment With Me
What has been filling your heart with noise lately?
Is there a place in your day where you could make room for just five quiet minutes with God?
What might He be inviting you to notice today?
Remember, God isn't hiding from you.
He's inviting you closer.
The question isn't whether He is willing to meet with you.
The question is whether you'll make space to listen.
Journal Prompts
- What distractions most often keep me from spending quiet time with God?
- When have I clearly experienced God's guidance through His Word?
- What does today's Scripture teach me about God's character?
- How can I intentionally create more quiet moments this week?
- What is one thing I sense God inviting me to trust Him with today?
A Prayer
Father,
Thank You for always making Yourself available to me.
Thank You that I don't have to search for You in dramatic moments because You are already near.
Help me slow down enough to recognize Your presence throughout my day.
Quiet the distractions in my heart and teach me to listen carefully to Your Word.
Give me wisdom to recognize Your truth and courage to follow wherever You lead.
Help me remember that spending time with You is never wasted.
May my heart become more attentive to Your voice and more confident in Your faithful love each day.
Thank You for patiently walking with me, even when life feels hurried.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
