Preparing the Heart Before Preparing the Holidays
Jun 29, 2026
When we think about Christmas preparation, our minds often go to practical things.
Shopping lists.
Travel plans.
Family gatherings.
Decorations.
Menus.
Schedules.
None of those things are wrong.
Many of them are meaningful parts of celebrating the season.
But there is a difference between preparing for Christmas and preparing our hearts for Christ.
Let's slow down for a moment.
When was the last time you intentionally prepared your heart to celebrate Jesus?
Not simply His birth as a historical event.
But the wonder of what Christmas truly represents.
God stepping into our broken world.
Emmanuel.
God with us.
The Savior entering human history.
The King arriving not in power and prestige, but in humility and love.
Those truths deserve more than a hurried glance squeezed between holiday responsibilities.
They deserve our attention.
Our reflection.
Our worship.
And sometimes that preparation begins long before December arrives.
🌟 God Often Prepares Hearts Long Before the Moment Arrives
One thing we see throughout Scripture is that God frequently prepares people before He fulfills His plans.
Think about Abraham.
Think about Moses.
Think about David.
Think about Mary.
God often worked in seasons of preparation before the moment people could fully understand what He was doing.
The Christmas story itself is filled with preparation.
For generations, God's people waited for the promised Messiah.
Prophets spoke of His coming.
Promises were given.
Hope was sustained.
Then, in God's perfect timing, Jesus arrived.
Galatians 4:4 says:
"But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son."
I love that phrase.
The fullness of time.
Not too early.
Not too late.
God was preparing history for the arrival of His Son.
And perhaps there is something we can learn from that.
Preparation matters.
Not because it earns God's blessing.
But because it positions our hearts to recognize what He is doing.
✨ The Danger of Waiting Until December
Have you ever noticed how quickly Christmas can become crowded?
Before we know it, our calendars are full.
The pace increases.
The expectations multiply.
And suddenly, finding quiet moments with God feels more difficult than ever.
The season that should draw us closer to Christ sometimes leaves us feeling distracted instead.
It's not intentional.
It's simply what happens when life becomes busy.
That's why preparing our hearts early can be so valuable.
When we begin reflecting on Jesus long before December arrives, we create space for anticipation.
Space for gratitude.
Space for worship.
Space for wonder.
Instead of rushing toward Christmas, we begin walking toward it thoughtfully.
And that changes the experience entirely.
📖 Mary Shows Us What Preparation Looks Like
One of the most beautiful examples of a prepared heart is Mary.
When the angel appeared to her, her life changed forever.
Yet throughout the Christmas story, we repeatedly see Mary's posture of reflection.
Luke 2:19 tells us:
"But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart."
Let's sit with that for a moment.
She treasured.
She pondered.
She reflected.
Mary didn't rush past what God was doing.
She slowed down enough to hold those moments close.
What stands out to you here?
In a world that constantly encourages us to move faster, Mary reminds us of the value of reflection.
Of making space.
Of paying attention.
Perhaps preparing our hearts for Christmas begins the same way.
Not by doing more.
But by slowing down enough to notice God.
🌿 Christmas Begins With Wonder
One of the greatest gifts we can cultivate before Christmas arrives is wonder.
Children seem to understand this naturally.
They anticipate.
They imagine.
They look forward to what is coming.
But as adults, we sometimes lose that sense of wonder.
The Christmas story becomes familiar.
The verses become familiar.
The traditions become familiar.
And familiarity can quietly rob us of awe.
Yet the truth remains astonishing.
The Creator entered creation.
The Word became flesh.
The King of Heaven came near.
The God who formed the stars chose to dwell among us.
When was the last time you allowed yourself to simply marvel at that?
Preparing our hearts early gives us room to rediscover the wonder of the Gospel.
To see familiar truths with fresh eyes.
To remember why Christmas matters.
🎁 Simple Ways to Prepare Your Heart Now
The good news is that preparing your heart doesn't require a complicated plan.
It begins with small, intentional choices.
You might start by reading a few Messianic prophecies throughout the summer.
Spend time in Isaiah.
Reflect on God's promises.
Journal what stands out.
You might create a gratitude journal focused on God's faithfulness throughout the year.
After all, Christmas is ultimately a celebration of God's greatest gift.
Perhaps you begin praying now for the people you'll gather with during the holidays.
Pray for opportunities to encourage them.
Pray that Christ would be at the center of your celebrations.
Or simply spend a few moments each week reflecting on the character of Jesus.
His humility.
His compassion.
His faithfulness.
His love.
Small practices often prepare our hearts in significant ways.
🍂 What This Reveals About God
As I've reflected on Christmas preparation, one truth continues to stand out.
God is always the One who takes the first step.
Christmas is the story of a God who came near.
A God who pursued us.
A God who entered our story because of His great love.
Preparing our hearts isn't about earning His presence.
It's about becoming more aware of the presence that is already available.
It's about slowing down enough to receive what He freely offers.
Peace.
Hope.
Joy.
Grace.
Love.
Those gifts aren't reserved for December.
They're available today.
And every day.
Because Jesus is still Emmanuel.
God with us.
🌟 Looking Ahead With Expectation
One of the beautiful things about preparing early is that it creates anticipation.
Not anxiety.
Not pressure.
Expectation.
The kind of expectation that grows when we spend time reflecting on God's goodness.
The kind of expectation that remembers His faithfulness.
The kind of expectation that looks forward to celebrating Jesus with gratitude and joy.
Friend, Christmas may still be months away.
But perhaps that's exactly why now is the perfect time to begin preparing your heart.
Not by adding more to your schedule.
But by creating more space for Jesus.
One prayer at a time.
One Scripture at a time.
One quiet moment at a time.
✍️ Reflection Questions
Take a few moments to reflect on these questions:
- What usually captures most of my attention during the Christmas season?
- How can I begin preparing my heart for Christ long before December arrives?
- What distractions tend to pull my focus away from Jesus?
- What aspect of the Christmas story fills me with the most wonder?
- How might God be inviting me to slow down and pay attention to His presence?
Spend some time journaling your thoughts and bringing them before the Lord.

So as summer unfolds around you, take a few quiet moments to reflect on His goodness.
Spend time in His Word.
Remember His promises.
Practice gratitude.
Cultivate wonder.
