Is Right and Wrong More Than Opinion? The Nuremberg Trials | A Case for God Ep. 23

Introduction

After World War II, the Nuremberg Trials confronted atrocities committed under the Nazi regime. Those proceedings still press us to ask whether right and wrong depend entirely on the laws and customs of a society. In Episode 23 of A Case for God, Tammy, founder of You Ministries, considers this question through the trials and turns to Scripture for a foundation for human dignity, conscience, and justice.

The question reaches beyond a courtroom. Every time we say that a person deserves fair treatment, even when others disagree, we are making a claim about what ought to be true for that person.

Why the Nuremberg Trials Still Matter Today

The trials involved leaders and officials accused of grave crimes, including crimes against humanity. Their defense could not simply rest on the fact that they acted under a government or followed orders. For believers, however, the trials provide a powerful occasion to ask why we recognize the worth of human lives and why authority must answer for the harm it causes.

That question is close to home whenever a popular opinion, a workplace rule, or our own convenience tempts us to overlook a neighbor’s dignity. Scripture does more than help us win an argument about morality. It calls us to live differently.

These four passages from the lesson connect moral responsibility to God’s Word and to the value of the people He created. They invite us to think carefully about conscience, authority, and the choices we make.

Genesis 1:27 (ESV)

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”

Connection: Human dignity begins with God’s creation, not with a government’s approval. This gives Christians a reason to defend the worth of people whom a society may disregard.

Exodus 20:13 (ESV)

“You shall not murder.”

Connection: God’s command names a moral boundary. The fact that an institution approves violence cannot by itself turn the taking of innocent life into something good.

Romans 2:14–15 (ESV)

“They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness…”

Connection: Paul describes conscience as a witness, even among people who did not receive Israel’s written law. Conscience can be ignored or distorted, so it must be examined in the light of God’s truth.

2 Timothy 3:16–17 (ESV)

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”

Connection: Scripture forms and corrects our moral judgment. It does not merely confirm whatever our culture, or our own habits, already prefers.

Together, these passages point to a standard for Christians that is larger than shifting public approval: God’s character and His instruction. They also press us to move from ideas about justice to care for real people.
