Growing Deep Roots Before Winter Comes

There's something about the changing seasons that always catches my attention.

The leaves begin to change.

The mornings feel a little cooler.

The days grow shorter.

And before long, the trees that were once full of green leaves begin to look bare.

If you didn't know how trees work, you might assume they're dying.

But that's not what's happening at all.

They're preparing.

They're conserving energy.

And all the while, their roots remain firmly planted beneath the surface.

I don't know about you, but I think our spiritual lives have seasons like that too.

There are seasons that feel full of growth. We see answered prayers. We feel excited to open our Bibles. We notice God changing our hearts in obvious ways.

And then there are quieter seasons.

The ones where life feels ordinary.

The ones where we don't feel much at all.

The ones where we wonder if we're growing.

Maybe you're in a season like that right now.

Perhaps you've been faithfully spending time with God, but you're wondering if it's making any difference.

Maybe life feels uncertain, and you're trying to hold on to your faith.

Or maybe you can sense a difficult season approaching, and you're asking God to prepare your heart before it arrives.

If that's you, I want to encourage you today.

God often grows deep roots before He grows visible fruit.

Let's Slow This Down for a Moment

Jesus tells a beautiful story in Matthew 13 about a farmer scattering seed.

Some seed fell on rocky ground.

It sprang up quickly.

But because it had no deep roots, the sun scorched it, and it withered away.

Later, Jesus explains why.

"As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, yet he has no root in himself... when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away." — Matthew 13:20–21 (ESV)

Take a moment with me.

Notice that the problem wasn't the seed.

It wasn't even the excitement.

The problem was the lack of roots.

What does this show us about God?

He isn't only interested in quick responses.

He's inviting us into lasting faith.

A faith that remains steady when life becomes difficult.

A faith that continues trusting Him when answers don't come right away.

A faith that grows beneath the surface long before anyone else can see it.

Roots Grow Where No One Is Looking

One of the interesting things about roots is that they're hidden.

No one compliments a tree for its roots.

People notice the blossoms.

The fruit.

The colorful leaves.

But the roots quietly do their work underground.

Our spiritual lives are much the same.

Some of the most important work God does in us isn't visible.

Learning to trust Him.

Choosing forgiveness.

Growing in humility.

Practicing patience.

Developing a habit of prayer.

Opening our Bible even when we don't feel inspired.

These moments rarely make headlines.

But they build something strong.

As I've walked with Jesus over the years, I've learned that the quiet seasons often become the deepest ones.

They're the seasons where our faith stops depending on feelings and begins resting in God's faithfulness.

Before Winter Comes

Trees don't wait until winter arrives to grow their roots.

The preparation happens long before the cold weather appears.

There's wisdom in that.

Because once the storm arrives, it's difficult to suddenly develop strong roots.

The same is true spiritually.

We don't build a relationship with Jesus only when life falls apart.

We build it day by day.

One prayer at a time.

One chapter of Scripture at a time.

One act of obedience at a time.

Then, when unexpected challenges come, our hearts already know where to turn.

Jesus doesn't become our last resort.

He remains our steady foundation.

What Does It Mean to Be Rooted in Christ?

Paul gives us a beautiful picture in Colossians.

"Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith..." — Colossians 2:6–7 (ESV)

I love the order of those words.

Rooted.

Then built up.

The roots come first.

Before visible growth.

Before strength.

Before fruit.

Roots always come first.

That's often the opposite of how we approach spiritual growth.

We want visible results.

We want to feel different immediately.

We want every prayer answered quickly.

But God often chooses the slower path because lasting faith takes time to develop.

Jesus Often Withdrew

When I read the Gospels, something continues to stand out.

Jesus often withdrew to quiet places to pray.

Even when crowds were waiting.

Even when there was more ministry to do.

Even when people needed Him.

He made time with the Father His priority.

Imagine that for a moment.

If Jesus valued quiet time with His Father, how much more do we need those moments?

Those quiet mornings.

Those whispered prayers.

Those slow walks with Scripture.

They may seem small.

But they're where our roots grow deeper.

Deep Roots Hold During Strong Winds

Storms reveal what sunny days cannot.

When the wind comes, shallow roots become obvious.

Strong roots do too.

I wish following Jesus meant we would never face hardship.

But Scripture tells us something different.

Jesus promised His presence, not a life without storms.

The good news is that we don't have to fear them.

When our hope is rooted in Christ, we have an anchor that circumstances cannot remove.

Not because we're strong.

Because He is.

Sometimes God Is Growing Trust

There are seasons when we pray and receive immediate answers.

Then there are seasons where heaven feels quiet.

Those seasons can be difficult.

But I've also found them to be deeply meaningful.

Because waiting has a way of revealing what we're trusting.

Are we trusting God's timing?

His goodness?

His wisdom?

His love?

Sometimes God doesn't simply answer our prayers.

Sometimes He grows our trust while we wait.

And that trust becomes one of the deepest roots we'll ever have.

What Does This Reveal About God's Character?

I always love asking this question.

When we slow down and look carefully, we begin seeing more than instructions.

We begin seeing God's heart.

So what do these passages reveal?

God is patient.

He never rushes healthy growth.

He values depth over appearance.

He prepares us before we realize we'll need that preparation.

He knows every season ahead.

Nothing surprises Him.

Winter may surprise us.

It never surprises God.

And because He knows what's coming, He faithfully prepares us today.

That's such a comforting thought.

The quiet time you spend with Him today isn't wasted.

The Scripture you're memorizing today isn't wasted.

The prayers you're praying today aren't wasted.

God is using all of it to strengthen your roots.

Keep Choosing the Quiet Faithfulness

Our culture celebrates quick success.

Quick results.

Quick growth.

But God's Kingdom often grows quietly.

Like seeds.

Like roots.

Like yeast working through dough.

Small.

Steady.

Faithful.

I want to encourage you not to underestimate the ordinary rhythms of walking with Jesus.

Opening your Bible.

Writing in your journal.

Praying before your day begins.

Listening instead of rushing.

Choosing gratitude.

Showing kindness.

Forgiving again.

These simple acts become the roots that sustain us through every season.

Father,

Thank You for caring more about the condition of my heart than my outward appearance.

Thank You for patiently growing my faith, even when I can't always see what You're doing.

Help me stay rooted in You through every season.

Teach me to value quiet faithfulness over quick results.

When life feels uncertain, remind me that my hope is firmly planted in Christ.

Grow deep roots of trust, peace, humility, and love within me so that no matter what season comes, I will remain close to You.

Thank You for preparing me today for the days ahead.

Help me keep walking with You one faithful step at a time.
