Giving Thanks Before the Harvest Is Finished

give thanks god is good harvest season harvest takes time his love endures Oct 12, 2026

There’s something about waiting for a harvest that can make us impatient.

We plant.

We water.

We work.

We pray.

And then we wait.

We want to see the fruit.

We want to know that all the work was worth it.

We want evidence that something is happening beneath the surface.

And if we're honest, our faith can feel a little like that too.

We pray for something and wait for an answer.

We ask God to provide and wait for provision.

We ask Him to restore something and wait for healing.

We ask Him to open a door and wait for direction.

Sometimes we're standing in the middle of the growing season, looking at what hasn't happened yet, wondering:

“God, when will I finally see the harvest?”

But what if we learned to give thanks before the harvest is finished?

What if gratitude isn't something we save for the end?

What if we can thank God while we're still waiting?

There is something beautiful about that kind of faith.

It says:

“God, I don't see the whole harvest yet, but I trust the One who planted the seed.”

We Don't Always See What God Is Doing

A farmer doesn't plant a seed and then dig it up every few days to check whether it's growing.

That wouldn't help the seed.

The farmer trusts the process.

There is growth happening underground that cannot yet be seen.

And sometimes God works in our lives the same way.

Something is happening beneath the surface.

A heart is changing.

A door is being prepared.

A relationship is being softened.

A lesson is being learned.

A character is being strengthened.

A prayer is being answered in ways we don't yet recognize.

We may not see it.

But that doesn't mean nothing is happening.

The Harvest Takes Time

Galatians 6:9 says:

“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”

I love those words:

In due season.

Not immediately.

Not according to our schedule.

In due season.

God is not rushed.

And He isn't careless with the timing of our lives.

We often want the harvest now.

God knows when the fruit is ready.

That can be difficult to trust.

But waiting doesn't mean God has forgotten you.

What If You Thank God Before You See the Answer?

This is where gratitude becomes an act of faith.

It's easy to thank God after the answer comes.

After the prayer is answered.

After the provision arrives.

After the relationship is restored.

After the door opens.

After the dream comes together.

But thanking God before we see the outcome is different.

It says:

“Lord, I trust You even while I'm waiting.”

That kind of gratitude doesn't depend on circumstances.

It depends on God's character.

We Can Thank God for Who He Is

Sometimes we don't know what God is going to do.

But we know who He is.

He is faithful.

He is good.

He is compassionate.

He is wise.

He is patient.

He is our provider.

He is our Shepherd.

He is our refuge.

He is with us.

So even when we don't understand the season, we can thank Him for who He is.

Psalm 100:5 says:

“For the LORD is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.”

Notice what the psalm doesn't say.

It doesn't say everything will always feel good.

It points us to something deeper.

God is good.

His love endures.

His faithfulness remains.

Those truths don't change when circumstances do.

Gratitude Isn't Pretending Everything Is Perfect

Sometimes we misunderstand gratitude.

We think being grateful means pretending everything is okay.

It doesn't.

You can be grateful and still grieve.

You can be thankful and still be disappointed.

You can trust God and still have questions.

You can praise Him while tears are still falling.

The Psalms show us this again and again.

David brought God his fear, frustration, sadness, and confusion.

And yet he continued to return to praise.

Gratitude doesn't require us to deny what hurts.

It gives us something solid to hold onto while we walk through it.

Give Thanks for the Seeds

Maybe you're in a season where the harvest isn't visible yet.

Instead of only looking at what isn't there, look for the seeds.

What has God already planted?

Maybe He's teaching you patience.

Maybe you're learning to trust Him.

Maybe you've started praying again.

Maybe you're spending more time in Scripture.

Maybe you've begun setting healthier boundaries.

Maybe you've forgiven someone.

Maybe you're becoming more aware of God's presence.

These things may not feel like a harvest yet.

But they are evidence of growth.

Thank God for the seeds.

Give Thanks for Small Things

We often wait for something big enough to feel grateful.

But gratitude grows when we learn to notice the small things.

A warm cup of coffee.

A quiet morning.

A friend who checked in.

A meal on the table.

A Scripture verse that encouraged you.

A good night's sleep.

A laugh.

A beautiful sky.

A safe trip home.

A moment of peace.

A prayer you remembered to pray.

These things may seem ordinary.

But ordinary blessings are still blessings.

What Are You Overlooking?

Take a moment with me.

What if you stopped today and looked around?

What would you notice?

Maybe you've been so focused on what you're waiting for that you haven't noticed what God has already given.

Maybe you've been looking at the empty space.

But there are blessings surrounding you.

Maybe they're quieter than the answer you're waiting for.

But they're there.

Sometimes gratitude begins with simply paying attention.

The Israelites Had to Remember

Throughout the Old Testament, God's people were repeatedly told to remember.

Remember what God had done.

Remember how He brought them out of Egypt.

Remember His provision.

Remember His faithfulness.

Why?

Because we forget.

We forget what God has done when we're focused on what He hasn't done yet.

That's why remembering is such an important spiritual practice.

Gratitude helps us look backward and say:

“God has been faithful.”

And when we remember His faithfulness yesterday, we can trust Him with tomorrow.

Remember the Previous Harvest

Maybe you are waiting for something right now.

Before you become discouraged, look back.

Where has God provided before?

What prayer has He answered?

What impossible situation did He carry you through?

What season did you once think you wouldn't survive?

What did God teach you there?

What blessing came that you didn't expect?

Make a list.

Write it down.

Don't trust your memory alone.

Create a record of God's faithfulness.

Then when another difficult season comes, you can return to it.

Gratitude Changes What We Notice

There is something about gratitude that changes our attention.

When we begin looking for God's goodness, we start seeing it.

Not because the world suddenly becomes perfect.

But because our eyes become more aware.

Instead of asking only:

“What am I missing?”

we begin asking:

“What has God already given me?”

Instead of:

“Why hasn't this happened?”

we can also say:

“Thank You for what You are doing right now.”

That doesn't remove the longing.

It simply gives us a different perspective while we wait.

Jesus Gave Thanks Before the Miracle Was Complete

One of the most beautiful examples is found in John 11.

Jesus stood outside Lazarus's tomb.

Lazarus had died.

His sisters were grieving.

The situation looked final.

But Jesus prayed.

And He said:

“Father, I thank you that you have heard me.”

Think about that moment.

Jesus gave thanks before Lazarus walked out of the tomb.

He trusted the Father.

The miracle had not happened yet.

But Jesus was already thanking God.

There is something powerful about that.

Sometimes gratitude comes before we see the answer.

Give Thanks in the Middle

Maybe you're somewhere in the middle right now.

Not at the beginning.

Not at the harvest.

The middle.

You've already prayed.

You've already planted.

You've already waited.

But you're still waiting.

The middle can be uncomfortable.

It's where doubt often gets loud.

It's where we start wondering whether anything is happening.

But the middle is also where God teaches us endurance.

Romans 5:3–4 says:

“Suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope.”

God can use the waiting season.

Not because waiting is easy.

But because He is present in it.

Your Waiting Is Not Wasted

I want to encourage you with this:

Your waiting is not wasted.

You may not see the fruit yet.

But God can still be growing something in you.

Maybe He's developing patience.

Maybe He's deepening your faith.

Maybe He's teaching you to release control.

Maybe He's showing you that your identity isn't found in the outcome.

Maybe He's teaching you to trust His timing.

The harvest isn't the only thing God cares about.

He cares about who we're becoming while we wait for it.

What If the Harvest Looks Different?

This can be hard.

Sometimes we picture a very specific harvest.

We know exactly what we want God to do.

But God sees more than we do.

His answer may look different.

His timing may be different.

His path may be different.

That doesn't mean He has failed.

It means He sees what we cannot.

Proverbs 3:5 reminds us:

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.”

We don't have to understand everything to trust Him.

Gratitude Keeps Our Hearts Soft

Waiting can make our hearts hard.

We can become frustrated.

Bitter.

Cynical.

Impatient.

We can start believing God owes us an explanation.

But gratitude keeps our hearts tender.

It reminds us:

“God has been good to me.”

“God has carried me.”

“God has provided.”

“God has not abandoned me.”

Even when the answer is still unfinished.

Try a “Before the Harvest” Gratitude List

Here's a simple practice you can begin today.

Take a piece of paper and write:

“God, I thank You before I see the harvest because…”

Then finish the sentence.

Maybe:

“...You have always been faithful.”

“...You have carried me before.”

“...You know what I cannot see.”

“...Your timing is better than mine.”

“...You are with me in the waiting.”

“...You have already given me so much.”

Then write five specific things you're thankful for today.

Not someday.

Today.

Give Thanks for God's Presence

One of the greatest blessings isn't an answered prayer.

It's God's presence.

He is with you while you're waiting.

He is with you while you're working.

He is with you while you're wondering.

He is with you when the answer finally comes.

Psalm 46:1 says:

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

Very present.

Not occasionally present.

Not present only when things go well.

Present.

Right now.

You Can Be Thankful and Still Ask

Gratitude doesn't mean you stop praying for what you need.

Keep asking.

Keep seeking.

Keep bringing your desires to God.

Jesus taught us to pray.

But as you ask, remember to thank Him too.

“Lord, I'm asking You for this.

And I'm thanking You that You are good even while I wait.”

That's a beautiful balance.

Hope and gratitude can exist together.

Let Your Gratitude Become Worship

When we thank God, we're doing more than making ourselves feel better.

We're turning our attention toward Him.

We're saying:

“God, You are worthy of my praise whether the harvest is full or I'm still waiting for the first signs of growth.”

That's worship.

And worship doesn't require perfect circumstances.

It requires a heart that remembers who God is.

Journal Prompts for the Waiting Season

Take some time with these questions:

What harvest am I currently waiting for?

What am I tempted to believe because I haven't seen the answer yet?

What has God already provided in this season?

What small blessings have I overlooked?

What seeds do I see God planting in my life?

Where have I seen God's faithfulness in the past?

What can I thank God for before the answer comes?

What part of my waiting do I need to surrender to Him?

What is God teaching me while I wait?

How can gratitude change the way I experience this season?

Don't rush through these.

Let yourself be honest.

God already knows what you're carrying.

A Prayer of Gratitude Before the Harvest

Lord,

Thank You.

Even before I see the harvest.

Thank You for who You are.

Thank You for Your faithfulness.

Thank You for Your patience with me.

Thank You for every way You have provided.

Sometimes I get so focused on what I'm waiting for that I forget to notice what You have already given.

Forgive me for the times I've overlooked Your goodness.

Open my eyes.

Help me notice the small blessings.

Help me remember the prayers You have answered.

Help me remember the times You carried me through.

And when I'm tempted to believe that nothing is happening, remind me that growth can happen where I cannot see it.

Teach me to trust You in the waiting.

Help me be grateful before the harvest is finished.

Thank You for the seeds.

Thank You for the growth.

Thank You for the lessons.

Thank You for Your presence.

And when the harvest finally comes, help me remember that it was Your faithfulness all along.

In Jesus' name,

Amen.

You Don't Have to Wait Until Everything Is Good

Maybe you've been telling yourself:

“I'll be grateful when…”

When the money comes.

When the relationship is restored.

When the prayer is answered.

When the diagnosis changes.

When the job comes.

When the door opens.

When life settles down.

But what if gratitude can begin now?

Not because everything is good.

But because God is good.

You can thank Him in the middle.

You can praise Him while you're waiting.

You can notice the blessings that exist alongside the unanswered questions.

You can say:

“Lord, I still believe You are good.”

That is faith.

A Harvest Will Come in Its Time

Galatians 6:9 reminds us not to grow weary.

There is a due season.

God sees the full picture.

He knows when the fruit is ready.

He knows what He's growing in you.

So keep planting.

Keep praying.

Keep obeying.

Keep trusting.

Keep giving thanks.

You don't have to force the harvest.

Your job isn't to make everything grow.

Your job is to remain faithful with what God has placed in front of you.

Let Him handle the timing.

Count the Blessings You Can See Today

Before you close this page, I want you to pause.

Think of five things.

Not five things you hope God will give you.

Five things He has already given you.

Write them down.

Say thank You.

Then think of one thing you're waiting for.

Give that to Him too.

You can hold both.

Gratitude for today.

Hope for tomorrow.

Trust for the waiting.

That's a beautiful way to walk with God.

Before the Harvest Is Finished

So if you're waiting today, don't assume nothing is happening.

The seed may be underground.

The roots may be growing.

The soil may be preparing for something you cannot see yet.

And while you wait, you can still give thanks.

Thank God for what He has already done.

Thank Him for what He is doing.

Thank Him for who He is.

Thank Him for His presence.

And trust Him with what is still unfinished.

The harvest may not be ready yet.

But God is still faithful.

And when you look back someday, you may realize that He was doing more in the waiting than you ever knew.

So keep going.

Keep praying.

Keep trusting.

Keep thanking.

The harvest isn't finished.

But neither is God’s work.
