Immanuel: God With Us

god with us greatest christmas gift immanuel jesus wept never forgotten Oct 10, 2026

There are some truths in Scripture that are so familiar we can almost forget how beautiful they are.

“God with us.”

We've heard the phrase.

We've sung about it at Christmas.

We've seen it on Christmas cards and decorations.

But have you ever stopped and really thought about what it means?

God with us.

Not God far away.

Not God watching from a distance.

Not God waiting for us to get everything together before He comes near.

God with us.

That is what the name Immanuel means.

And when we slow down and think about it, this name tells us something incredibly comforting about the heart of God.

He comes near.

He is present.

He doesn't abandon His people.

And He didn't simply send a message from heaven.

He came Himself.

Jesus entered our world.

He stepped into our ordinary human experience.

He came close.

So as we move through the Christmas season, let's slow down and sit with this one beautiful truth:

God is with us.

What Does Immanuel Mean?

The name Immanuel appears in Isaiah 7:14:

“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”

Hundreds of years later, Matthew connects this prophecy to the birth of Jesus.

Matthew 1:23 says:

“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel”

And Matthew explains:

“which means, God with us.”

There it is.

Simple.

Beautiful.

God with us.

The Creator entering His creation.

The holy God coming near to sinful people.

The Savior stepping into our world.

Christmas is not simply the story of a baby being born.

It is the story of God coming near.

God Has Always Wanted to Be With His People

When you look through Scripture, you begin to notice something.

God's presence has always mattered.

In the Garden of Eden, God walked with Adam and Eve.

In the wilderness, God led His people.

He appeared in the cloud and fire.

He dwelt among Israel in the tabernacle.

Later, His presence was associated with the temple.

Again and again, we see God making a way to dwell with His people.

And then something changes.

Instead of His presence being associated primarily with a place, God comes to us in a Person.

Jesus.

John 1:14 says:

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”

The God who had been revealing Himself throughout Scripture came near in human flesh.

He lived among us.

He walked our roads.

He ate at tables.

He touched the hurting.

He listened to people.

He wept.

He laughed.

He experienced hunger and weariness.

He came close.

God With Us in Ordinary Life

Sometimes we imagine God's presence only in spiritual moments.

Church.

Worship.

Bible study.

Prayer.

Those moments matter.

But Jesus shows us something beautiful.

God is present in ordinary life too.

Jesus spent time around tables.

He walked along roads.

He attended weddings.

He talked with people in their homes.

He noticed children.

He stopped for the sick.

He spoke with people others avoided.

He entered ordinary human spaces.

That means our ordinary lives matter to God.

The kitchen matters.

The commute matters.

The workplace matters.

The quiet morning matters.

The difficult conversation matters.

The parenting moments.

The lonely moments.

The moments nobody else sees.

Immanuel means God is with us there too.

God With Us When We Feel Alone

Maybe this is the part of Immanuel your heart needs most.

You can be surrounded by people and still feel lonely.

You can have a full calendar and still feel empty.

You can be part of a family and still feel unseen.

You can walk into church and still feel alone.

But feelings of loneliness don't change the truth of God's presence.

He is with you.

Psalm 23:4 says:

“I will fear no evil, for you are with me.”

Notice what gives David courage.

Not the absence of the valley.

The presence of God.

The valley is still there.

But David isn't alone in it.

And neither are you.

God With Us in Difficult Seasons

Sometimes we wonder where God is when life becomes difficult.

Where is He when the prayer hasn't been answered?

Where is He when someone we love is hurting?

Where is He when our plans fall apart?

Where is He when we don't understand?

Immanuel doesn't mean we won't experience hardship.

It means God doesn't leave us in hardship.

He enters it with us.

Think about Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in Daniel 3.

They were thrown into the fiery furnace.

And then something remarkable happened.

The king looked into the furnace and saw a fourth person walking with them.

They were not alone.

God was with them in the fire.

Sometimes we pray:

“God, please take me out of this.”

And sometimes He does.

But sometimes His answer is:

“I will be with you in it.”

That doesn't mean the situation is easy.

But His presence changes the way we walk through it.

God With Us When We Are Afraid

Fear can make us feel alone.

It tells us:

“You're on your own.”

“You have to figure this out.”

“No one is coming.”

“You can't handle this.”

But Scripture tells us something different.

Isaiah 41:10 says:

“Fear not, for I am with you.”

Again, notice the reason.

God doesn't simply say:

“Don't be afraid.”

He says:

I am with you.

His presence is the foundation for our courage.

Maybe you're facing something today that makes you afraid.

You don't have to pretend you're not scared.

You can tell Jesus exactly how you feel.

“Lord, I'm afraid.”

Then remember:

Immanuel.

God with you.

God With Us When We Don't Know What to Do

There are seasons when we simply don't know.

We don't know what decision to make.

We don't know which door to choose.

We don't know how something will work out.

We don't know what the next month will look like.

We don't know what God is doing.

Those seasons can be uncomfortable.

But uncertainty doesn't mean God has disappeared.

He is still with you.

Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us:

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.”

You don't have to understand everything to trust Him.

Sometimes faith simply says:

“God, I don't know what You're doing.

But I know You are with me.”

Mary Experienced Immanuel Personally

Imagine Mary's experience.

The angel came to her with news that would completely change her life.

She didn't have every answer.

She didn't know every detail.

She didn't know how Joseph would respond at first.

She didn't know what the future would look like.

But she said:

“Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”

Mary trusted God with what she couldn't understand.

And then she carried Jesus.

Think about the mystery of that.

The One who would be called Immanuel was growing within her.

God with us.

The promise was becoming flesh.

Joseph Had to Trust Immanuel Too

Joseph also had questions.

His plans changed.

His future looked different than he expected.

But God spoke to him through an angel and reassured him.

Joseph chose obedience.

He stayed.

He protected Mary and Jesus.

He followed God's direction even when the path wasn't what he had planned.

Sometimes trusting God means accepting that His plans may look different from ours.

But His presence goes with us into those unexpected places.

Jesus Came Close to the Hurting

One of the things I love about Jesus is how often He stopped for hurting people.

He didn't stay at a comfortable distance.

He came close.

He touched lepers.

He spoke with the rejected.

He welcomed children.

He ate with sinners.

He listened to the grieving.

He noticed people everyone else overlooked.

This is what God with us looks like.

God is not uncomfortable with our pain.

He is not afraid of our mess.

He is not embarrassed by our weakness.

He comes near.

Jesus Wept

John 11 gives us one of the shortest verses in Scripture:

“Jesus wept.”

Think about that.

Jesus stood outside Lazarus's tomb.

He knew resurrection was coming.

He knew what He was about to do.

And yet He wept with those who were grieving.

That tells us something about God.

He cares about our sorrow.

He doesn't simply rush us through it.

He is compassionate.

He is present.

He enters our grief.

Immanuel.

God with us.

Even when we cry.

God With Us Means We Can Bring Him Everything

Sometimes we divide our lives.

We bring God the “spiritual” things.

But we keep the rest to ourselves.

Our worries.

Our relationships.

Our finances.

Our work.

Our emotions.

Our decisions.

But if God is with us, we don't have to hide any part of our lives from Him.

Bring Him the whole thing.

Tell Him about the conversation that hurt.

Tell Him about the decision you're afraid to make.

Tell Him about the thing you're excited about.

Tell Him about the person you're worried about.

Tell Him about your plans.

Tell Him what you don't understand.

He is already there.

Immanuel Means You Are Never Forgotten

There may be moments when you feel overlooked.

Maybe someone forgot something important to you.

Maybe you weren't invited.

Maybe your hard work wasn't noticed.

Maybe someone you love doesn't seem to understand what you're carrying.

Those experiences hurt.

But people may overlook us.

God does not.

Psalm 139 reminds us that God knows us completely.

He knows when we sit down and when we rise.

He knows our thoughts.

He knows our words before we speak them.

There is nowhere we can go where His presence isn't already there.

That's comforting.

You are seen.

You are known.

You are not forgotten.

God With Us Doesn't Always Feel Like God With Us

This is important.

There will be moments when God's presence feels very real.

And there will be other moments when you don't feel anything.

Don't confuse feelings with truth.

God's presence isn't dependent on your emotional state.

He is with you when you feel close to Him.

And He is with you when you feel spiritually dry.

He is with you when you are full of faith.

And He is with you when you're struggling to believe.

He is with you when you worship.

And He is with you when all you can whisper is:

“Help me.”

Immanuel is a promise.

Not a feeling.

God With Us Changes How We Walk Through the Day

Imagine waking up tomorrow and remembering:

God is with me today.

How might that change your morning?

Before checking your phone:

“God is with me.”

Before walking into work:

“God is with me.”

Before the difficult conversation:

“God is with me.”

When you're sitting in traffic:

“God is with me.”

When you feel overwhelmed:

“God is with me.”

When you sit down at the dinner table:

“God is with me.”

When you lie down at night:

“God is with me.”

This truth can become an anchor.

Practice the Presence of God

You don't need a complicated spiritual routine.

Simply practice remembering.

Choose a phrase:

“Jesus, You are with me.”

Repeat it throughout the day.

When you feel anxious.

When you feel grateful.

When you need wisdom.

When you're tired.

When you're excited.

Let it remind you that God isn't somewhere far away.

He is near.

Journal Prompts for Immanuel

Take some quiet time and sit with these questions:

What does “God with us” mean to me personally?

Where do I most need to remember God's presence right now?

When have I experienced God's presence during a difficult season?

What fear becomes smaller when I remember that God is with me?

What part of my life have I been hesitant to bring to God?

How would my day look different if I intentionally remembered God's presence?

What does Jesus' nearness reveal about God's character?

Where do I need to trust God even though I don't feel His presence?

Don't rush.

Let the questions sit with you.

Sometimes one simple sentence can become a prayer.

A Prayer of Remembering

Jesus,

Thank You for coming near.

Thank You that You are Immanuel.

God with us.

When I feel alone, remind me that You are near.

When I feel afraid, remind me that You are with me.

When I don't know what to do, remind me that I don't have to figure everything out alone.

When life feels heavy, help me remember that You are carrying me.

When I am joyful, help me remember to thank You.

When I am grieving, help me remember that You see every tear.

When I am busy, help me slow down enough to notice You.

When I am distracted, draw my heart back to You.

Thank You that You came into our world.

Thank You that You didn't remain distant.

You came close.

You lived among us.

You know what it is like to walk through this world.

And because of Jesus, I never have to wonder whether You care.

You are with me.

Today.

Tomorrow.

In the joyful moments.

In the difficult ones.

In the ordinary.

In the unknown.

Help me live with that truth close to my heart.

In Jesus' name,

Amen.

The Greatest Christmas Gift Is God's Presence

We give and receive so many gifts at Christmas.

Some are wrapped.

Some are placed under a tree.

Some are homemade.

Some are purchased.

But the greatest gift was never something we could put in a box.

It was Jesus.

God gave us Himself.

John 3:16 reminds us:

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son.”

Think about that.

God's love moved toward us.

He didn't wait for humanity to become worthy.

He came because He loved.

Jesus is the gift.

And His presence is the heart of the Christmas story.

You Don't Have to Go Through This Season Alone

Maybe this Christmas season feels different for you.

Maybe you're carrying something nobody else knows about.

Maybe you're entering the holidays with grief.

Maybe you're exhausted.

Maybe you're worried.

Maybe you're excited about a new season.

Maybe you're simply trying to keep up.

Wherever you are, remember:

Immanuel.

God with you.

You don't have to manufacture joy.

You don't have to pretend everything is okay.

You don't have to make the season perfect.

Just stay close to Jesus.

He is close to you.

Let “God With Us” Become Personal

Sometimes we hear a beautiful truth and then move on.

I don't want you to rush past this one.

Take the words personally.

Not just:

“God is with people.”

But:

God is with me.

He is with you in your kitchen.

He is with you at your desk.

He is with you in the car.

He is with you in the hospital room.

He is with you in the quiet house.

He is with you at the family gathering.

He is with you in the lonely night.

He is with you when you're celebrating.

He is with you when you're crying.

He is with you when you don't know what to do next.

God with you.

That's Immanuel.

Keep This Truth Close

If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed during this season, I want to encourage you to return to Scripture.

Find a quiet place.

Open your Bible.

Read slowly.

Write down what God is reminding you.

And when your heart starts racing, pause and remember:

God is with me.

You can use these verses during your quiet time, write them in your journal, keep them beside your bed, or return to them whenever your heart feels unsettled.

Sometimes we don't need another thing to accomplish.

We simply need a truth to remember.

And this is a truth worth remembering:

You are not alone.

Jesus has come near.

He is still near.

And He will never leave you.

Immanuel

As Christmas approaches, don't rush past the name.

Immanuel.

Say it slowly.

God with us.

God with us when we understand.

God with us when we don't.

God with us when life feels beautiful.

God with us when life feels broken.

God with us when prayers are answered.

God with us when we are still waiting.

God with us in the celebration.

God with us in the quiet.

God with us in the ordinary.

God with us in the unknown.

And perhaps that's what your heart needs to hear today.

You don't have to walk into tomorrow alone.

You don't have to walk into December alone.

You don't have to walk into a difficult conversation alone.

You don't have to walk into a new season alone.

Immanuel is with you.

The God who came near in Bethlehem is still near today.

So breathe.

Slow down.

Take another step.

And remember:

God is with you.

Always.
