Creating a Cozy Fall Bible Study Routine That Draws You Closer to Jesus

There is something about the arrival of fall that invites us to slow down.

The mornings feel a little cooler. The sun rises a little later. We find ourselves reaching for a warm cup of coffee or tea, wrapping up in a favorite blanket, and welcoming the quiet that comes before the day begins.

While many people look forward to pumpkins, colorful leaves, and cozy sweaters, I believe autumn offers us something even sweeter—it reminds us to pause.

Life has a way of filling every season with activity. Summer often leaves us catching our breath, and before we know it, the holidays are already on the horizon. But fall gives us an opportunity to intentionally create space for what matters most.

Our relationship with Jesus.

A cozy Bible study routine isn't about having the perfect reading nook or collecting the prettiest journals. Those things can certainly make our study time enjoyable, but they aren't what draws us closer to God.

It's the quiet moments.

It's opening His Word before checking our phones.

It's whispering a prayer before the busyness of the day begins.

It's allowing Scripture to shape our hearts one verse at a time.

Those simple, faithful habits become the places where God gently meets us.

If you've been longing for a fresh start in your quiet time, fall is a wonderful season to begin. Today, let's talk about how to create a Bible study routine that feels welcoming, peaceful, and centered on Christ.

Begin by Creating Space, Not Perfection

One of the biggest obstacles to spending time with God isn't a lack of desire.

It's the feeling that we need everything to be just right before we begin.

We tell ourselves we'll start after life slows down.

After the house is clean.

After the grandchildren go home.

After work settles down.

After we buy the perfect Bible.

After we organize our study supplies.

But Jesus has never asked us for perfection.

He simply invites us to come.

Sometimes the holiest place isn't a beautifully decorated Bible study corner. Sometimes it's the kitchen table before everyone else wakes up. Sometimes it's a comfortable chair by the window. Sometimes it's ten quiet minutes in the car before heading into work.

God isn't waiting for the perfect setting.

He's waiting for your heart.

As the leaves begin to change colors each fall, they quietly remind us that God works through seasons. Trees don't rush the process, and neither should we. Spiritual growth often happens in the ordinary moments that seem small at the time but become deeply meaningful over weeks and months.

When we faithfully return to God's Word each day, He gently shapes our hearts, one page at a time.

A Simple Place to Begin

Instead of trying to create the "perfect" routine, gather just a few simple things:

  • Your Bible
  • A journal or notebook
  • A pen or highlighter
  • A warm drink
  • A quiet place where you can focus for a few minutes

That's enough.

Everything else is simply a blessing—not a requirement.

Your quiet time isn't measured by how beautiful it looks. It's measured by your willingness to spend time with the One who loves you most.

Build a Simple Fall Bible Study Rhythm

One of the questions I'm asked most often is,

"How do I stay consistent in my Bible study?"

The answer usually surprises people because it isn't about finding more time. It's about creating a rhythm.

Think about the changing seasons. Every autumn, the leaves begin to change at just the right time. The days become shorter. The air grows cooler. Nature doesn't rush from one season to the next. It follows the rhythm God established from the very beginning.

Our spiritual lives thrive when we embrace that same kind of rhythm.

Instead of trying to study for an hour every day, begin with a simple plan that you can return to consistently. Even fifteen or twenty minutes spent intentionally in God's Word can have a lasting impact over time.

Here's a routine that has helped me—and many women in our Y.O.U. Ministries community—stay rooted in Scripture.

Start with Prayer

Before you read a single verse, invite God into your time with Him.

Your prayer doesn't need to be long or polished. Simply ask Him to help you understand His Word and to reveal what He wants you to learn that day.

You might pray something like:

"Father, quiet my heart. Help me set aside the distractions of today so I can hear Your voice through Your Word. Teach me something new about You, and help me live it out. In Jesus' name, Amen."

Beginning with prayer reminds us that Bible study isn't just about gaining information—it's about building a relationship with the Lord.

Let's Walk Through the Scriptures Together

One of my favorite parts of studying the Bible is slowing down enough to really see what's happening.

I say it all the time—we're going to walk through the Scriptures together.

Instead of rushing to finish a chapter, let's stay here for a minute.

Picture yourself standing there.

What do you see?

What do you hear?

Who's in the crowd?

What are they feeling?

Now here's another question...where are you in the story?

I think sometimes we read the Bible so quickly that we miss the people. We miss their fears, their questions, their struggles, and even their joy. They weren't perfect people. They were ordinary people learning to trust an extraordinary God.

And if we're honest, that sounds a lot like us.

I've found that when I slow down and really imagine the scene, I notice things I never noticed before. Maybe it's a question Jesus asked. Maybe it's someone He stopped to talk to. Maybe it's one sentence that I've read dozens of times, but suddenly the Holy Spirit uses it to speak right into what I'm walking through today.

That's why I don't measure my quiet time by how many chapters I finish.

I'd rather spend twenty minutes with one passage that changes my heart than race through five chapters just to say I did.

God isn't impressed by how quickly we read His Word. He's interested in our hearts.

So don't worry about checking a box today.

Open your Bible.

Ask the Lord to teach you something about Himself.

Then stay there long enough to hear what He wants to say.

You might be surprised how much He can do with just a few verses and a willing heart.

Write What God Is Teaching You

You don't need pages and pages of notes to benefit from journaling.

Sometimes one sentence is enough.

Write down:

  • A verse that stands out.
  • Something you learned about God's character.
  • A promise you want to remember.
  • A question you'd like to explore further.
  • One practical way you can live out today's lesson.

Over time, these simple journal entries become a beautiful record of your walk with the Lord. Months or even years later, you'll be able to look back and see how God has faithfully guided, encouraged, and grown your faith.

That's one of the reasons I love Bible journaling so much. It isn't about creating something perfect—it's about creating a place where you can remember what God has been teaching you along the way.

Make Your Space Feel Welcoming

While God will meet you anywhere, creating a peaceful environment can help you look forward to your quiet time.

Light a candle if you enjoy it.

Pour a cup of coffee or tea.

Wrap up in your favorite blanket.

Open the curtains and let the morning light fill the room.

Turn on quiet instrumental worship music if it helps you focus.

These simple touches aren't the purpose of Bible study, but they can help remove distractions and make your time with the Lord feel like an appointment you genuinely look forward to.

As the crisp air of autumn settles in, let it become a gentle reminder to settle your heart before God as well.

Not because everything in life is calm—but because He is.
