Building a Bible Study Routine Before Life Gets Busy
Aug 03, 2026There always seems to be a season just around the corner that promises to be busier than the one we're in now.
Maybe it's the start of a new school year. A new job. Holiday preparations. A move. A growing family. Or simply the everyday responsibilities that seem to multiply without us even noticing.
I don't know about you, but I've caught myself saying, "Once things settle down, I'll spend more time in God's Word."
Have you ever said something similar?
We tell ourselves that when life becomes less hectic, we'll finally have the time and energy to build a consistent Bible study routine. We'll wake up earlier. We'll open our journals more often. We'll linger a little longer in prayer.
But somehow, life rarely slows down on its own.
And here's what I've learned.
The best time to build a rhythm with God isn't after life gets busy.
It's before.
Not because we're trying to earn God's approval or check another item off our to-do list. Quite the opposite. We create space for His Word because we know we'll need His truth when the busy days come.
A strong spiritual foundation isn't built in the middle of the storm.
It's built before the storm arrives.
Jesus Often Withdrew to Be with the Father
One of the things I love about reading the Gospels is seeing the priorities of Jesus.
His days were full.
Crowds followed Him.
People needed healing.
Questions were constant.
There was always someone waiting.
Yet over and over again, we see Jesus intentionally stepping away to spend time with His Father.
Take a moment with me and imagine that.
If anyone had a reason to skip quiet time, it would seem like Jesus did.
Yet He never viewed time with the Father as optional.
It was essential.
Luke tells us that Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.
Notice that word: often.
This wasn't something He did only when life felt manageable.
It was His rhythm.
His relationship with the Father shaped everything else He did.
What stands out to you here?
For me, it's a reminder that intimacy with God wasn't squeezed into the margins of Jesus' life.
It was the center.
And if the Son of God prioritized time with the Father, how much more do we need that daily connection?
Why We Wait
Many of us don't avoid Bible study because we don't love God.
We avoid it because we think we need more time than we actually do.
We imagine that meaningful time with God requires an uninterrupted hour, a perfectly clean house, a quiet morning, and a heart that's already focused.
The problem is that those conditions don't come around very often.
Life is wonderfully messy.
Phones ring.
Children wake up.
Meetings begin.
Laundry piles up.
Unexpected situations appear.
If we're waiting for the perfect moment, we'll spend a lot of time waiting.
But God isn't asking for perfection.
He's inviting us into relationship.
And relationships are built one conversation at a time.
One morning.
One verse.
One prayer.
Over time, those small moments become a beautiful habit of walking with Him.
Start Small and Stay Faithful
Sometimes we make Bible study harder than it needs to be.
We set goals that are so big they become discouraging after only a few days.
Maybe we've promised ourselves that we'll read several chapters every morning or complete an extensive study before breakfast.
Those are wonderful goals if they fit your season.
But if they don't, they can leave us feeling defeated.
Here's what I've learned over the years.
Consistency matters more than intensity.
Five focused minutes with an open heart are more meaningful than thirty distracted minutes spent rushing through a reading plan.
Take a moment with me.
Imagine planting a seed.
You wouldn't expect it to become a flourishing tree overnight.
You water it.
Care for it.
Give it sunlight.
Come back again tomorrow.
Spiritual growth often works the same way.
God delights in our faithful return to Him.
Day after day.
Little by little.
Let God's Word Become Familiar
Psalm 119 reminds us that God's Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path.
I've always loved that picture.
A lamp doesn't usually illuminate miles of road ahead.
It gives enough light for the next step.
Sometimes we want God to reveal the entire journey before we begin walking.
Instead, He often gives us exactly what we need for today.
That's one of the reasons a regular Bible study routine is so valuable.
When we spend time in Scripture consistently, God's truth becomes familiar.
Then, when difficult moments come, we're not scrambling to find hope.
His Word is already taking root in our hearts.
The verses we've read during peaceful seasons often become the ones the Holy Spirit gently brings back to mind during challenging ones.
God is so faithful that way.
Creating a Rhythm That Fits Your Season
One of the beautiful things about walking with Jesus is that your quiet time doesn't have to look exactly like someone else's.
If you're raising young children, your Bible study may happen in small pockets throughout the day.
If you're working full-time, perhaps your quiet moments happen during lunch or before bed.
Maybe your best time is early in the morning while the house is still quiet.
Or perhaps it's during an evening walk when you can reflect on what you've read.
The important question isn't, "Does my routine look impressive?"
The better question is, "Does my routine help me stay close to Jesus?"
God isn't comparing your quiet time to anyone else's.
He's simply inviting you to meet with Him.
And He meets us right where we are.

Preparing Before the Busy Season Arrives
Think about athletes for a moment.
They don't wait until the championship game to begin training.
Preparation comes first.
The same is true spiritually.
When life becomes overwhelming—and at some point, it will—we'll naturally fall back on the rhythms we've already built.
That's why today's quiet moments matter so much.
They're preparing your heart for tomorrow's challenges.
As I've sat with this truth, I've realized that some of the seasons where I felt most anchored weren't necessarily the easiest seasons.
They were the seasons where God's Word had already become part of my everyday life.
His promises were familiar.
His faithfulness was fresh in my mind.
His presence felt close because I had learned to meet with Him consistently.
Removing the Pressure
Can I encourage you with something?
If you've struggled to maintain a Bible study routine in the past, you're not starting from failure.
You're simply starting again.
God isn't disappointed every time we miss a day.
He doesn't keep score.
He welcomes us back.
Every single time.
That's the heart of our Father.
Sometimes we place pressure on ourselves that God never intended us to carry.
We think He'll love us more if we never miss a morning.
But His love has never depended on our performance.
We spend time in His Word because we already belong to Him.
Not because we're trying to earn our place.
That changes everything.
Simple Ways to Build a Lasting Bible Study Routine
If you're wondering where to begin, don't overcomplicate it.
Choose one place and one time that fits your current season.
Keep your Bible somewhere you'll see it every day.
Have a notebook nearby to write down verses, questions, or prayers.
Ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand what you're reading.
Read slowly.
Don't rush to finish a chapter if one verse captures your attention.
Sit with it.
Ask yourself:
- What does this passage reveal about God's character?
- What stands out to me today?
- Is there a promise to remember?
- Is there something God is inviting me to trust Him with?
Bible study isn't about getting through the pages.
It's about allowing God's Word to get into our hearts.
Giving Yourself Grace Along the Way
There will be mornings when your routine gets interrupted.
Travel happens.
Children get sick.
Unexpected responsibilities appear.
Life isn't predictable.
When those days come, don't let one missed day become a missed week.
Simply come back.
Grace is part of spiritual growth too.
God isn't asking for flawless consistency.
He's inviting faithful relationship.
And relationships always leave room for grace.
Every time you return to His Word, you're responding to an invitation from a loving Father who delights in spending time with you.
What a beautiful gift that is.
A Gentle Reminder
If you've been waiting for the "perfect time" to begin studying your Bible consistently, maybe today is that gentle nudge you've been needing.
Not because tomorrow will necessarily be busier.
But because your heart will always be strengthened by spending time with Jesus today.
His Word brings peace when life feels overwhelming.
Wisdom when decisions are difficult.
Hope when circumstances seem uncertain.
Comfort when your heart is weary.
And perhaps most importantly, it reminds us who God is.
Faithful.
Present.
Patient.
Loving.
Always.
So don't worry about creating the perfect Bible study routine.
Simply begin.
One passage.
One prayer.
One quiet moment at a time.
Before long, you'll discover that what began as a simple habit has become one of the sweetest parts of your day.
And when life inevitably becomes busy again, you'll have something steady to return to.
Not just a routine.
But a relationship with the One who never changes.
Journal Prompts
Take a few moments to reflect on these questions with the Lord:
- What has kept me from building a consistent Bible study routine?
- When during my day do I naturally have a few quiet moments to spend with God?
- What is one realistic step I can take this week to begin or strengthen my time in Scripture?
- How has God's Word encouraged me during previous busy seasons?
- What might God be inviting me to trust Him with today?
Prayer
Father,
Thank You for inviting me into a relationship with You each day. Thank You that Your Word is living, faithful, and always relevant for every season of my life.
Help me make time to be with You before the demands of the day begin to compete for my attention. Teach me not to see Bible study as another task to accomplish, but as an opportunity to know You more deeply.
When life becomes busy, remind me to return to You instead of relying on my own strength. Give me wisdom to build rhythms that fit this season of my life, and help me remain faithful in the small moments. Thank You that You never grow tired of welcoming me back, no matter how many times I begin again.
Create in me a heart that loves Your Word, listens for Your voice, and trusts You one day at a time.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
