The Importance of Christian Values

Jan 29, 2021

Today we will be discussing the values God wants us to have in our life. As these values represents not just who we are but what we are as a Christian.

This topic is for those people living in the worldly things but being a Christian at the same time.

By the end of this post, will learn what are the values we Christians should live by as this will create a big impact on our lives.

Living With Worldly Values

Some of the challenges we have been facing are living with worldly values. Worldly values include wealth, power, pleasure, revenge, fame, vanity and status. These values are the most important things to people who perceive no power or purpose beyond themselves. Worldly values promote jealousy, resentments and conflicts among people in accordance with the purposes of Satan.

 Godly Lives

Many people sincerely want to live Godly lives but we often hear conflicting ideas of what that means. There are many aspects of values we take on in life, it could be a value for character, value of work, or value of personal aspects.

How we live is important, but a lack of compromise in the world concerning the values leads some to try to step aside in this issue by classifying certain areas of life as “value free.” As Christians we know that there is no such thing. There is no neutral ground. All of life is God’s, and Christian values affect every area of our lives.

 Faith and Heavenly Character

We have faith in the individuals who are made new in Christ and are called to be heavenly in character and lead, and can just live this path by being filled with the Lord's Spirit. We believe in the Bible and its adequacy to build up our faith and conduct. We trust God wills for individuals everywhere to know Him and be made new in Christ. We accept that the motivation behind the Church is to love God in spirit and in truth, and to reach at a lost and fallen world with the good news of Jesus Christ through its love, witness, and loving deeds.

Examples From the Experts

Here is some thought from Craig D. Lounsbrough (Licensed Professional Counselor in the State of Colorado and is ordained by the Evangelical Church Alliance.)

“Change. It's needed, but maybe not in the way that we think it's needed. It seems that we need to be thoughtful about the values that we've embraced because of the ethics that we've discarded. We need to challenge the apathy that we've fallen into because of the convictions that we've fallen out of. Make no mistake about it, the collapse of the world around us began with the darkening of the souls within us. Therefore, it's not about changing a nation that's in turmoil out there. It's about changing a soul that's gone dark in here.”

LOVE Always

One of the first Christian value that Jesus himself calls us to do is to “love.” God’s love for His followers is everlasting. Love for God and love for the others is not only the evidence of the presence of Christ in our life, but it also holds the power to transform a person’s existence. Love is a fundamental characteristic of who God is and it is a value that describes His children as well.

"Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves." - Romans 12:9-10 (NIV)

For us humans it is not hard to love. We can give our love to our family, friends, or even our co-workers. But what if God asks us to love the person who hates us, or simply the person we hate? Do you think you can do it? Is there a way we can love our enemies?

Jesus taught us not just to “Love Thy Neighbor”, which in itself can be a difficult thing. But “Love your enemies”. That’s a powerful message, and it turns out, one of the greatest challenges in our life. These people might be the ones who teased you in high school, picked on you with bad names or disrespected you. Maybe a family member that you previously got into a fight with and has left you with a grudge. Or how about teacher or an officemate who is mean to you.

And what does it mean to love these people?  You don’t have to love them like you love your parents or children or best friend. Just a simple sentiment will be enough… and if possible, express it through words, or by doing something nice, or with a smile.

43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. (Matthew 5:44-45) (NIV)

It’s not easy, I know. But just think about how Jesus would have done it, and that should humble you enough to let the burden of unforgiveness leave your body.

BE AT Peace

There are many aspects of these Christian values mentioned in the Bible that refer to rest, tranquility and ultimately, peace, which is a beautiful gift from God. Peace is essential to Christianity. There is no doubt about it.

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.” - Colossians 3:15

The Holy Spirit holds the ability to usher in peace in a person’s heart. This, in fact, is one of the Christian values at the center of the Biblical narrative. Peace in one’s heart and peace with others are just two Christian principles worthy of embracing.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God’’. Matthew 5:9

The importance of peace in Christianity can hardly be excessive. Some consider peace to be the absence of tension. Tension threatens our security, and thus, our sense of peace. Most of us do not like tension in our lives and make every effort to eliminate it. Indeed, excess tension is a common cause of physical and emotional problems.

At its core, finding peace is an individual pursuit, and what we depend upon for our security is where we will find our peace. If we seek security in money and material possessions, we will always feel insecure because those types of treasures are easily lost to us. But if we seek God for peace, our life will be in great hands.

‘’Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid’’. John 14:27

Allow God to be your comfort in these troubled times. God promises us “peace that passes understanding.” In other words, peace in a world that doesn’t make sense. You can know peace, even while the world is in turmoil. God does not change. Ever.

Kindness in Every Way

In a society that emphasizes self, it’s easy to lose sight of the important role that kindness plays. Along with loving others comes the Christian principle of caring for them — and being kindhearted.

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” - Colossians 3:12

The Christian must look for opportunities to show kindness to others in culture at large. That next-door neighbor, the waitress in a restaurant, beggar sitting on the sidewalks, etc. From helping the poor and those in need to holding the door for someone, kindness is simple. It’s one of the hallmarks of a Christ-filled heart.

God’s deeds taught us about many Christian values, such as kindness and compassion. He raised children from the dead out of pity for their parents and accepted disciples from all walks of life. Most important of all, he gave up his life so all of us can be saved.

Be Generously Giving

This is the core Christian value of being kind and unselfish, especially with our money and time. The Bible tells us to share generously with those in need, and good things will come in return.

Each of us has something to offer to someone in need. We can give our money and our time to charity, be a friend to someone who is sick or lonely, do volunteer work or choose a service-oriented occupation. We may give unselfishly of our time to our spouse, children or parents.

"The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their food with the poor." – Proverbs 22:9

Too often, we want to feel generous before we act generously. True Christian generosity is an act of obedience. As we behave generously, we find that the feelings will follow—and we’ll see God’s faithfulness in meeting needs through us while providing our own need.

Managing your resources is an important part of generosity. It is very important that you know how to budget your expenses because it enables you to give confidently instead of simply wondering if you’re going to be able to contribute.

‘’The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty’’. Proverbs 21:5

Each of us has something to give. Some have wealth, some have talents, some have time. Whatever gifts we have been given -- large or small -- we should share generously. When we do, we make the world better for someone else and find true meaning and satisfaction in our own lives.

Keep the faith

There is only one God and He is supreme and eternal. The Bible shows us His three equal divine persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. God does not depend on anyone; all of living things depends on Him. God is holy, just, wise, loving and good.

In the present ministry of the Holy Spirit, by whose indwelling the Christian is empowered to live a holy life, to witness and work for the Lord Jesus Christ

“Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.” - Deuteronomy 7:9

Of all the Christian values, faithfulness is the one on which so many of the others are grounded. Trusting and loving God and living out that commitment helps to ensure one is embracing and showing the other Christian principles to their fullest.

‘’Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments’’. Deuteronomy 7:9

God holds each person responsible and accountable for the choices they made and actions pursued. Human responsibility and accountability do not limit God’s sovereignty. God’s sovereignty does not diminish human responsibility and accountability.

Salvation from the penalty of sin is found only through the substitutionary, atoning death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. As the sinless One, He took upon Himself the just punishment for our sins.

And Finally...

As we pursue growth in virtues, we discover that we fall short and need God’s grace to transform our character. We pursue virtue not to impress God or declare ourselves good, but to seek to live as God intends in response to his grace to us.

THE NEXT STEP

Many people wander through life mixed up. They struggle to make decisions. They don’t know what they want. They don’t know what to do. They have no plan for their lives and have no idea where to even begin building a life of meaning. They live in a constant state of overwhelm.

That's why God created these values in order for us to follow and embed them in  our own life, so we will be able to not just please God but also become a better person.

Identifying your values is not hard to do. Surprisingly, we each have only a few core values that would effectively guide our lives if we just took the time to discover what they are and decide to let them be our standard. Internalized values become our trusted guide, the measuring stick by which we evaluate our choices, the inner knowing that makes real realism possible.
