Why You Should Start Your Advent Study Early

advent journal advent study countdown hope grow prophets Aug 24, 2026

There’s something about the weeks leading up to Christmas that can feel like they disappear almost as quickly as they arrive.

One moment it's early November, and we think we have plenty of time. The next, our calendars are full, shopping lists are growing, holiday gatherings are filling the weekends, and somehow Christmas morning is right around the corner.

I don't know about you, but I've had years when I reached Christmas feeling more exhausted than expectant.

I had wrapped the gifts.

Baked the cookies.

Decorated the house.

Checked every box on my holiday to-do list.

But somewhere along the way, I realized I hadn't really prepared my heart.

I had spent weeks getting ready for Christmas.

I just hadn't slowed down to prepare for Christ.

Maybe you've felt that tension too.

We truly want Jesus to be the center of the season. We don't intentionally push Him aside. Life simply gets loud.

That's one reason I've come to appreciate beginning an Advent study before Advent officially begins.

Not because we want to rush the season.

But because we want to enter it with hearts that are already turning toward Jesus.

Starting early gives us the gift of slowing down before everything else speeds up.

Advent Is More Than a Countdown

When many of us hear the word Advent, we think of calendars, candles, and counting down the days until Christmas.

Those traditions can be wonderful reminders.

But Advent is much more than marking time until December 25.

The word Advent means "coming."

It's a season of waiting.

A season of remembering God's promises.

A season of looking back to Christ's first coming while also looking ahead with hope to the day He will come again.

At its heart, Advent invites us to wait with expectation.

And waiting has never been easy.

We naturally want to hurry.

We like quick answers.

Immediate results.

Instant solutions.

Yet throughout Scripture, we see that God often does some of His deepest work while His people are waiting.

Let's Slow This Down for a Moment

Think about the people who waited for the Messiah.

Generation after generation held onto God's promises.

Prophets spoke of the One who would come.

Families told the stories.

Prayers were offered.

Years turned into centuries.

Still they waited.

Imagine being one of them.

You know the promises.

You believe God is faithful.

But you don't know when His answer will come.

Then, in what may have seemed like an ordinary night, everything changed.

A baby was born in Bethlehem.

The promised Savior had come.

What does this show us about God?

It reminds us that God always keeps His promises, even when His timing stretches beyond what we can see.

Advent helps us remember that truth.

And beginning early gives us more time to sit with it.

Why Start Your Advent Study Early?

There isn't a rule that says you have to begin early.

This isn't about doing Advent "better."

It's about creating room.

When December arrives, life often becomes wonderfully full.

School programs.

Church events.

Holiday meals.

Travel.

Shopping.

Wrapping gifts.

Hosting family.

None of those things are wrong.

In fact, many of them are beautiful ways to celebrate the season.

But they can also leave very little margin for quiet reflection.

Starting your Advent study a week or two before the season officially begins allows your heart to settle before your schedule fills.

Instead of trying to squeeze Jesus into an already crowded calendar, you're intentionally making space for Him first.

Preparing Your Heart Before Your Home

We often spend weeks decorating our homes for Christmas.

We hang lights.

Trim the tree.

Set out the nativity.

Light candles.

And those traditions can point our hearts toward Christ.

But here's something I've been thinking about.

What if we prepared our hearts with the same intentionality?

What if we spent as much time making room for Jesus inwardly as we do preparing everything outwardly?

Psalm 51 includes David's prayer,

"Create in me a clean heart, O God."

That feels like such a fitting prayer before Advent begins.

Because Christmas isn't ultimately about perfectly decorated homes.

It's about hearts that are open to Jesus.

Slowing Down Before the Rush

One of the things I appreciate most about starting early is that it changes my pace.

Instead of rushing through a daily reading because I have ten other things to do, I have room to linger.

To read a passage twice.

To sit quietly with a verse.

To write a prayer in my journal.

To ask,

"What does this reveal about God?"

Those unhurried moments often become the ones I remember most.

Jesus never seemed to hurry through the moments that mattered.

He walked.

He paused.

He noticed people.

He made room for conversations.

As His followers, perhaps we can do the same.

Let Hope Grow Before December

Traditionally, Advent focuses on themes like hope, peace, joy, and love.

What if you gave those themes time to grow before the calendar officially turned?

Spend a few days reflecting on hope.

Read the promises of Isaiah.

Notice how often God reminds His people not to fear.

Then move into peace.

Read about the Prince of Peace.

Reflect on the peace Jesus offers that isn't dependent on circumstances.

By the time Advent begins, those truths are already taking root.

A Gentle Rhythm for the Weeks Ahead

You don't need a complicated plan.

Sometimes the simplest rhythms become the most meaningful.

You might begin by:

  • Reading one short passage each morning.
  • Writing one sentence about what stands out.
  • Praying through the Scripture you've read.
  • Memorizing one verse each week.
  • Ending each day by thanking God for one reminder of His faithfulness.

Simple doesn't mean insignificant.

These small moments prepare our hearts in quiet ways we may not notice until later.

The Gift of Waiting Well

As I've sat with the Advent story over the years, I've realized that waiting isn't wasted time.

Throughout Scripture, waiting is often where trust grows.

It's where hope deepens.

It's where we learn to depend on God rather than our own timelines.

Starting your Advent study early reminds you that Christmas isn't only about celebrating an event.

It's about welcoming a Savior.

Every passage you read.

Every prayer you write.

Every quiet morning you spend with God becomes another opportunity to remember that Jesus came—and that He is still faithfully present with us today.

Beginning Again with Jesus

Maybe this year has been busy.

Maybe your quiet time has felt inconsistent.

Maybe you've been longing to reconnect with the Lord but haven't known where to begin.

Perhaps this is your invitation.

Not to create a perfect Advent season.

But to begin again.

To open your Bible.

To spend a few quiet minutes with Jesus.

To let His Word prepare your heart before the celebrations begin.

Because the greatest gift of Christmas isn't found beneath the tree.

It's found in the Savior who came to dwell among us.

And there is no better way to prepare for His coming than simply spending time with Him.

Journal Prompts

Take a moment with me and reflect on these questions:

  • What usually distracts me during the Christmas season?
  • How can I begin preparing my heart before my schedule becomes busy?
  • What Advent theme—hope, peace, joy, or love—do I most need to reflect on right now?
  • What does the story of Jesus' coming reveal about God's faithfulness?
  • What is one simple step I can take this week to make room for Jesus?

Write honestly.

God isn't asking for a perfect holiday season.

He's inviting you into a deeper relationship with Him.

A Prayer

Father,

Thank You for sending Jesus, the fulfillment of every promise and the hope of the world. Thank You that Advent reminds me of Your faithfulness and Your perfect timing.

As I begin preparing for this season, help me make room for You before my calendar becomes full. Teach me to slow down, to wait with hope, and to treasure Your presence above every holiday tradition.

Prepare my heart before I prepare my home. Let this Advent season draw me closer to Jesus and remind me again of the wonder of His coming.

Thank You for always being faithful to Your promises.

In Jesus' name,

Amen.
