Why Spiritual Growth Feels So Hard (And What God Never Asked You to Carry)

bible journaling bible study devotional campfire assessment campfire blog post 1 prayer life Jul 18, 2026

Have you ever looked at your spiritual life and wondered why it feels harder than you thought it would?

Maybe you started the year with good intentions.

You bought the journal.

Made the reading plan.

Highlighted the verses.

Promised yourself this would be the year you would finally stay consistent.

And then life happened.

The laundry piled up.

The appointments filled the calendar.

The family needed you.

The unexpected crisis showed up.

And somewhere between your intentions and your reality, you began feeling like you were falling behind.

If that’s where you are today, I want to tell you something that took me years to learn:

God never asked you to carry the pressure you’re carrying.

The Weight We Were Never Meant to Carry

Many women approach their spiritual lives the same way they approach everything else.

We create goals.

We make plans.

We build checklists.

And before long, our relationship with God starts feeling more like another responsibility than a relationship.

We measure ourselves by questions like:

  • Did I read enough today?
  • Did I pray long enough?
  • Did I finish the study?
  • Am I growing fast enough?
  • Why does everyone else seem more spiritual than me?

Little by little, faith becomes something we perform instead of someone we pursue.

The problem isn’t that spiritual habits are bad.

Spiritual habits are wonderful.

The problem comes when we begin believing our worth is tied to our performance.

That’s a burden God never asked us to carry.

Jesus Never Invited Us Into Performance

When Jesus called His disciples, He didn’t say:

“Impress Me.”

He didn’t say:

“Achieve spiritual perfection.”

He didn’t say:

“Get everything figured out first.”

He simply said:

“Follow Me.”

That’s it.

A relationship.

A journey.

A daily walk.

The invitation has never changed.

And perhaps that’s why so many of us feel exhausted.

We’re trying to carry expectations that Jesus never placed on us.

Growth Happens Slower Than We Think

One of my favorite things about Montana is the way growth happens quietly.

The seasons don’t rush.

The mountains don’t hurry.

The wildflowers don’t bloom overnight.

Everything unfolds in its proper season.

Faith is often the same way.

We want dramatic change.

God often works through daily faithfulness.

We want immediate results.

God develops deep roots.

We want a spiritual breakthrough.

God teaches us to trust Him one ordinary day at a time.

The truth is that most spiritual growth happens in moments that feel insignificant while we’re living them.

A Bible verse read before work.

A prayer whispered while driving.

A moment of gratitude before bed.

A decision to trust God one more day.

Those moments may seem small.

But God is using them to build something lasting.

What If You’re Not Behind?

I wonder how many women are discouraged simply because they’re measuring growth incorrectly.

What if you’re not behind?

What if God is working even when you can’t see it?

What if the quiet season you’re walking through is actually producing stronger roots than you realize?

The enemy loves to convince us that we’re failing.

God gently reminds us that He is faithful.

The enemy points to what hasn’t happened yet.

God points to where He is leading us today.

The enemy whispers that we aren’t enough.

God reminds us that Christ is enough.

Building a Foundation Instead of Chasing Perfection

At You Ministries, we’re beginning a year-long discipleship journey called Around the Campfire.

And if there’s one lesson I hope women carry with them throughout the year, it’s this:

Strong faith is not built through spiritual pressure.

Strong faith is built through faithful presence.

One prayer.

One Scripture.

One journal entry.

One conversation with God.

One step at a time.

The goal is not perfection.

The goal is connection.

The goal is not performance.

The goal is presence.

And friend, God is far more interested in walking with you than grading you.

Your Next Faithful Step

Before you leave today, I want to encourage you to stop asking:

“What should I be doing better?”

And instead ask:

“What is one faithful step God is inviting me to take today?”

That’s where growth begins.

Not in striving.

Not in pressure.

Not in perfection.

But in simply saying yes to the next step.
