Why It's Time to Prepare Your Heart for Advent
Sep 21, 2026
There’s something about the weeks leading up to Christmas that can feel a little… full.
The calendar starts filling up.
The stores get busier.
There are gifts to buy, meals to plan, decorations to pull out of storage, gatherings to attend, and a hundred little things that seem to need our attention.
And before we know it, Christmas is here.
But sometimes, in the middle of preparing everything around us for Christmas, we forget to prepare the one thing that matters most.
Our hearts.
I don’t know about you, but I’ve found that December can arrive before my heart is ready for it.
I may be excited about Christmas. I may love the lights, the music, the traditions, and the beautiful reminders of Jesus’ birth.
But excitement and spiritual readiness are not always the same thing.
That’s why I want to encourage you to begin preparing your heart for Advent before the Christmas season is in full swing.
Not because you need one more thing on your to-do list.
Quite the opposite.
Preparing your heart for Advent is an invitation to slow down.
To make room.
To remember.
To turn your attention back toward Jesus.
And sometimes, that preparation needs to begin before the season feels like it has even started.

Advent Is About More Than Christmas Decorations
When we think about preparing for Christmas, we often think about what needs to be done.
The house needs to be decorated.
The presents need to be purchased.
The Christmas cards need to be sent.
The menus need to be planned.
The calendar needs to be organized.
But Advent invites us to prepare differently.
It reminds us that Christmas is not simply a date on the calendar.
It is the celebration of the coming of Jesus.
The Savior who stepped into our world.
The promised Messiah.
God with us.
And that is worth slowing down for.
Isaiah 9:6 says,
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given.”
Think about that for a moment.
A child is born.
A Son is given.
This was not just another event in history.
This was God keeping His promise.
And the people of God had been waiting for that promise for generations.
They waited.
They hoped.
They watched.
They trusted.
And eventually, Jesus came.
So perhaps preparing our hearts for Advent means learning something from those who waited for Him.
It means becoming people who know how to slow down long enough to notice what God is doing.

What If We Prepared Our Hearts Before December?
Imagine walking into December without feeling like you are already behind.
Imagine having a little space in your heart before the Christmas rush begins.
Imagine opening your Bible in the morning and knowing that you don't have to rush through the passage just to check something off your list.
Imagine sitting quietly with the Lord and asking,
“Jesus, what do You want me to notice this season?”
That kind of preparation may look very simple.
It may not look impressive at all.
Maybe it’s ten quiet minutes with your Bible.
Maybe it’s writing a prayer in your journal.
Maybe it’s reading through the Christmas story slowly.
Maybe it’s choosing one Scripture to carry with you throughout the week.
Maybe it’s simply sitting with God and saying, “Lord, help me make room for You.”
There is no perfect formula.
There doesn’t need to be.
The goal isn't to create the perfect Advent experience.
The goal is to make room for Jesus.
Mary Shows Us What It Looks Like to Receive Jesus
One of the people I think about when preparing my heart for Advent is Mary.
Her story is familiar to many of us.
An angel came to her with news that would completely change her life.
She would give birth to the Son of God.
There were probably so many questions.
So many unknowns.
And yet Mary responded with surrender.
In Luke 1:38, she says,
“Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”
There is something beautiful about those words.
Mary didn't have every detail figured out.
She didn't know exactly how everything would unfold.
But she trusted God.
She surrendered.
She made room for what He was doing.
And that makes me wonder…
What would it look like for us to approach Advent with that same posture?
Not trying to control every detail.
Not trying to create the perfect Christmas.
Not trying to make everything look beautiful on the outside while our hearts are exhausted on the inside.
But simply saying,
“Lord, I am here.
I am listening.
Make room in me for what You want to do.”

Sometimes Our Hearts Need Decluttering Too
We understand the idea of cleaning our homes before guests arrive.
We put things away.
We clear the clutter.
We make space.
But what about our hearts?
Sometimes our hearts carry things we don't realize are taking up so much room.
Worry.
Disappointment.
Comparison.
Unforgiveness.
Busyness.
Grief.
Expectations.
Things we thought would happen this year but didn't.
Prayers we are still waiting to see answered.
Relationships that are difficult.
Seasons that haven't gone the way we hoped.
And then Christmas comes along, telling us to be joyful.
But sometimes joy doesn't come easily.
Sometimes we need to bring those things honestly before God first.
Psalm 139:23–24 gives us a beautiful prayer:
“Search me, O God, and know my heart!”
What if part of preparing for Advent is allowing God to search our hearts?
Not so He can shame us.
Not so He can point out everything we've done wrong.
But because He already knows us completely.
He knows what we're carrying.
He knows where we're tired.
He knows where we've become distracted.
He knows where we need healing.
And He gently invites us to bring those things into His presence.
You Don't Have to Enter Advent in a Hurry
This may be one of the simplest reminders we can carry into the Christmas season:
You don't have to hurry.
Jesus was never in a hurry.
When I read the Gospels, I notice how often Jesus stopped.
He noticed people.
He listened.
He withdrew to pray.
He sat with His disciples.
He made room for interruptions.
He was fully present.
And perhaps that is one of the gifts we can give ourselves this Advent.
Permission to slow down.
Not because everything else suddenly becomes unimportant.
But because Jesus is important enough to notice.
Sometimes we are so busy preparing for Christmas that we miss Christ.
We can hear the Christmas songs without worshiping.
We can read the Christmas story without really seeing Jesus.
We can attend every gathering and still feel spiritually empty.
We can do all the right things and forget why we are doing them.
That's why preparing your heart matters.
It brings us back to the center.
Jesus.
Let Advent Become a Season of Remembering
Advent is a season of remembering.
We remember God's promises.
We remember the waiting.
We remember the prophets who pointed toward the coming Messiah.
We remember Mary.
We remember Joseph.
We remember Bethlehem.
We remember the shepherds.
We remember the angels.
And ultimately, we remember that God came near.
Matthew 1:23 gives us the name Emmanuel, which means “God with us.”
God with us.
Not God far away.
Not God watching from a distance.
God with us.
That truth changes the way we walk into Christmas.
Because whatever this season looks like for you, you don't walk through it alone.
Maybe this Christmas will be full of joy.
Maybe it will also carry some sadness.
Maybe you'll be surrounded by family.
Maybe you'll experience an empty chair at the table.
Maybe you're entering a new season.
Maybe you're still waiting for something you've prayed about for a long time.
Whatever your December holds, God is with you.
And that is worth remembering before the season gets busy.

Start Preparing Your Heart Now
You don't have to wait until December 1st to begin.
You can start today.
Start small.
Open your Bible.
Choose a Gospel to read slowly.
Spend a few minutes in prayer.
Write down what you're thankful for.
Ask God to show you what needs to be surrendered.
Think about the people God has placed in your life.
Pray for them.
Ask the Lord to help you notice Him in ordinary moments.
And perhaps most importantly, don't turn this into another performance.
You don't need to complete a complicated study.
You don't need the perfect journal.
You don't need a picture-perfect quiet time.
You simply need a willing heart.
God can meet you in ten quiet minutes.
He can meet you in the middle of your kitchen.
He can meet you while you're driving.
He can meet you in a quiet morning before everyone else wakes up.
He can meet you in the middle of a busy December afternoon.
The point isn't creating a perfect environment.
The point is making space to remember His presence.
A Few Questions to Sit With
As you begin preparing your heart for Advent, take a moment with me.
Put down the list.
Take a deep breath.
And ask yourself:
What am I carrying into this season that I need to surrender to God?
Where have I allowed busyness to crowd out time with Jesus?
What promise of God do I need to remember right now?
What am I hoping God will do in my heart this Advent?
What would it look like for me to slow down and truly notice Jesus?
Don't rush through these questions.
You don't have to answer them all at once.
Maybe one question stands out.
Stay there for a while.
Let God speak to you through His Word.
A Simple Prayer for Preparing Your Heart
Lord Jesus,
As Advent approaches, help me slow down.
Help me remember that this season is not about doing everything perfectly. It is about remembering You.
Search my heart and show me what I need to surrender.
Quiet the noise around me.
Quiet the noise within me.
Help me let go of expectations, worries, distractions, and the things that keep me from noticing Your presence.
Teach me to wait with hope.
Teach me to worship with a grateful heart.
Teach me to make room for You.
As I prepare for Christmas, prepare my heart first.
Help me remember the wonder of Your coming.
You are Emmanuel.
God with us.
And I don't want to rush past that beautiful truth.
Thank You for coming near.
Thank You for keeping Your promises.
Thank You for meeting me right where I am.
Help me enter this Advent season with a heart that is open, expectant, and centered on You.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
Make Room for a Slower Fall Season
Before Advent arrives, there is still time to slow down and spend a little more intentional time with God.
Sometimes the best preparation for a busy season is creating space before the busyness begins.
If you’re looking for a simple way to slow down, reflect on Scripture, and spend meaningful time with God this fall, I want to invite you to download the free Christmas Planner.
It was created to help you create a quiet space for Scripture, reflection, and prayer during this beautiful changing season.
You don't have to do everything at once.
Just begin with one page.
One Scripture.
One prayer.
One quiet moment with Jesus.
Let this fall be more than a season you move through.
Let it be a season where you make room for God.
And as Advent gets closer, may you find that your heart is already beginning to prepare.
Not because you have everything figured out.
Not because your December will be perfect.
But because you have been learning to slow down, listen, and remember.
Jesus is coming.
God keeps His promises.
And He is with us.
Always.
