What It Means to Walk by Faith Every Day

faith grows faith journey god's character trusting god walk by faith Oct 05, 2026

I don't know about you, but sometimes I wish God would just show me the whole plan.

Tell me what's coming.

Show me how everything is going to work out.

Give me the answers now so I don't have to wonder.

Wouldn't that be nice?

But most of the time, that's not how God leads us.

Instead, He invites us to trust Him one step at a time.

One prayer at a time.

One decision at a time.

One ordinary day at a time.

That's what it means to walk by faith.

Faith isn't always about doing something big.

Sometimes faith looks very small.

Getting out of bed and trusting God with the day.

Praying when you don't know what to say.

Opening your Bible when your heart feels distracted.

Choosing obedience when you don't understand.

Letting go of something you've been trying to control.

Taking the next step even though you can't see the whole road.

Walking by faith is simply learning to live with our eyes on God instead of our eyes on everything we cannot control.

And the beautiful thing is this:

God doesn't ask us to walk by faith alone.

He walks with us.

What Does It Mean to Walk by Faith?

Hebrews 11:1 gives us one of the clearest descriptions of faith:

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”

Faith involves trusting what we cannot see.

That doesn't mean faith is pretending.

It doesn't mean ignoring reality.

It doesn't mean we never ask questions.

Faith means we trust God even when we don't have all the answers.

We believe His character is trustworthy.

We believe His promises are true.

We believe He sees what we cannot see.

And because we trust Him, we keep walking.

Faith Is Not the Same as Having No Fear

Sometimes we think faithful people never feel afraid.

But Scripture tells us a different story.

David was afraid.

Moses was afraid.

Joshua needed encouragement.

Esther had to step into a frightening situation.

The disciples were afraid during the storm.

Faith doesn't mean fear never shows up.

It means fear doesn't have to make our decisions for us.

You can be afraid and still trust God.

You can have questions and still obey.

You can feel uncertain and still take the next step.

That is faith.

Abraham Walked Without Knowing the Destination

One of the clearest examples of walking by faith is Abraham.

God called Abraham to leave his country and his family and go to a place God would show him.

Hebrews 11:8 says:

“By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.”

Let's pause there.

He went without knowing where he was going.

That sounds uncomfortable.

Most of us like directions.

We want the map.

We want the timeline.

We want to know what happens next.

Abraham didn't have that.

He had a promise.

And he had God.

That was enough for the next step.

What Would Faith Look Like for You Today?

Maybe you're facing your own version of Abraham's journey.

You don't know exactly what comes next.

Maybe you're considering a change.

Maybe you're waiting for an answer.

Maybe God is asking you to let go of something.

Maybe you're entering a new season and don't feel prepared.

You may not have the whole map.

But what has God already shown you?

That's where faith begins.

You don't have to obey instructions God hasn't given you yet.

Start with the ones He has.

Take the next step.

Faith Grows Through Trust

Proverbs 3:5–6 says:

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

I love how honest this passage is.

It doesn't say we'll understand everything.

In fact, it tells us not to lean entirely on our understanding.

That's hard.

Because we like understanding.

We like explanations.

We like knowing why.

But sometimes God asks us to trust Him before we understand Him.

That's where faith grows.

Not when everything makes sense.

But when we choose to trust God's character even when the circumstances don't.

Faith Is Built in Ordinary Moments

We often think about faith in terms of big decisions.

Should I move?

Should I change jobs?

Should I take this opportunity?

Should I say yes?

Those decisions matter.

But faith is also built in ordinary moments.

Choosing patience when you're irritated.

Telling the truth when lying would be easier.

Forgiving when you still feel hurt.

Praying instead of immediately reacting.

Turning to Scripture instead of letting fear take over.

Serving someone when nobody notices.

Resting when you feel like you have to keep proving yourself.

These small moments matter.

Everyday faithfulness matters.

Faith Means Trusting God With the Unknown

There will always be things we don't know.

We don't know exactly what tomorrow will bring.

We don't know how every prayer will be answered.

We don't know what every relationship will look like next year.

We don't know what opportunities will come.

We don't know how certain circumstances will unfold.

But we can know God.

And sometimes knowing who He is matters more than knowing what will happen.

Think about that.

You may not know the future.

But God does.

You may not know the way.

But God does.

You may not know how He will provide.

But God does.

You may not know when the answer will come.

But God is not confused by the timing.

Faith Means Remembering God's Character

When we're afraid, our circumstances can become very loud.

That's why we need to remember who God is.

He is faithful.

He is good.

He is wise.

He is patient.

He is present.

He is loving.

He is trustworthy.

When you don't know what to do, go back to what you know about God.

Maybe write it down.

God has been faithful before.

God is faithful today.

God will still be faithful tomorrow.

Your circumstances may change.

His character does not.

What About When God Says Wait?

Waiting is one of the hardest places to walk by faith.

We often understand obedience when God says, “Go.”

But what about when He says, “Wait”?

Waiting can feel like doing nothing.

But spiritually, waiting can be an active expression of trust.

Isaiah 40:31 says:

“But they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength.”

Waiting doesn't mean God is doing nothing.

Sometimes He is working in ways we can't see.

Sometimes He is preparing us.

Sometimes He is changing circumstances.

Sometimes He is changing us.

And sometimes the waiting itself teaches us something we couldn't learn any other way.

Faith Doesn't Require You to Know the Outcome

Think about Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

When they faced the fiery furnace, they trusted God.

But they didn't know what He would do.

They said:

“Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us... But if not...”

But if not.

That phrase is powerful.

Their faith wasn't based on getting the outcome they wanted.

They trusted God regardless.

That's a mature kind of faith.

Not:

“God, I trust You because I know You'll do exactly what I want.”

But:

“God, I trust You because I know who You are.”

That's different.

Faith and Surrender Go Together

Sometimes walking by faith means releasing our grip.

We say:

“Lord, this is what I want.”

“But I trust You with the outcome.”

That's surrender.

We can pray for healing.

We can pray for provision.

We can pray for restoration.

We can pray for the opportunity.

We can ask God boldly.

But we can also say:

“Your will be done.”

That doesn't mean our desires don't matter.

It means we trust God more than we trust our own plans.

Jesus Showed Us Perfect Trust

If we want to understand faith, we look at Jesus.

In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed:

“Not my will, but yours, be done.”

Jesus knew what was ahead.

He knew the cross was coming.

He wasn't pretending it would be easy.

He prayed honestly.

And then He surrendered.

That's a beautiful picture for us.

Faith doesn't mean pretending we don't care about the outcome.

It means trusting God with the outcome.

We can be honest about what we want and still surrender it to Him.

Faith Means Following Even When It Costs You

Sometimes obedience will cost us something.

It may cost comfort.

Time.

Money.

Popularity.

Approval.

Convenience.

But if God is leading us, obedience is worth it.

Jesus said in Luke 9:23:

“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”

Notice the word:

Daily.

Walking with Jesus is a daily choice.

Not a one-time decision.

Every morning we get another opportunity to say:

“Jesus, lead me.”

Faith Is a Daily Practice

Maybe you're wondering how to actually walk by faith every day.

Start small.

Before you begin your day, pray:

“Lord, I trust You with today.”

Open Scripture.

Ask God to show you what you need to know.

Then go into your day looking for opportunities to obey Him.

When something unexpected happens, pause.

Pray before reacting.

When fear rises, remind yourself of God's promises.

When you're tempted to control everything, surrender again.

At the end of the day, look back.

Where did you see God?

Where did you trust Him?

Where did you struggle?

What did He teach you?

That's how faith grows.

One day at a time.

Walking by Faith When You Can't See the Next Step

Sometimes the next step isn't obvious.

You may feel stuck.

If that's where you are, don't assume you have to figure out your entire future tonight.

Ask God for the next step.

Maybe it's simply:

Make the phone call.

Have the conversation.

Rest.

Pray.

Apologize.

Forgive.

Apply.

Wait.

Study.

Serve.

Say no.

Say yes.

Sometimes faith is not about a dramatic move.

It's about quiet obedience.

Don't Compare Your Faith Journey

It's easy to look at someone else's life and think they have more faith than you.

Maybe they seem confident.

Maybe they make decisions quickly.

Maybe they seem to know exactly what God is doing.

But you don't know their whole story.

And God isn't asking you to live their story.

He is asking you to follow Him.

Your faith journey may look different.

You may need more time.

More prayer.

More confirmation.

More rest.

That's okay.

Stay close to Jesus.

Let Him lead you.

What If You Feel Like Your Faith Is Small?

Jesus talked about faith as small as a mustard seed.

That's encouraging because sometimes our faith feels very small.

Maybe you believe, but you're still afraid.

Maybe you trust God, but you still have questions.

Maybe you're praying, but part of you is wondering what will happen.

You don't have to manufacture perfect faith.

Bring what you have to Jesus.

Say:

“Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief.”

That's an honest prayer.

God can work with an honest heart.

Faith Grows When We Remember

One of the best ways to strengthen your faith is to remember what God has already done.

Think back.

Where has God provided?

Where has He protected you?

What prayers has He answered?

What impossible situation did He carry you through?

What Scripture did He use to encourage you?

What season did you think would break you but God brought you through?

Write these things down.

Because there will be days when you forget.

Your journal can remind you.

God was faithful then.

And He is faithful now.

A Simple Faith Journal Practice

At the end of each day, write three things:

Where I saw God today.

Where I had to trust God today.

What I want to give to God tomorrow.

It might take five minutes.

But over time, you'll begin to notice patterns.

You'll see God's provision.

His protection.

His timing.

His gentle correction.

His presence.

You'll begin to recognize that He was with you in moments you didn't even realize.

Questions to Help You Walk by Faith

Take a quiet moment and ask yourself:

What am I trying to control right now?

What am I afraid will happen?

What has God already asked me to do?

Where am I waiting for an answer?

What promise from Scripture do I need to remember?

Where have I seen God's faithfulness in the past?

What would trusting God look like today?

What is one small step of obedience I can take?

You don't need to answer these perfectly.

Just be honest.

God already knows what's in your heart.

A Prayer for Everyday Faith

Lord,

I want to trust You.

But sometimes I'm afraid.

Sometimes I want to know the whole plan before I take the first step.

Sometimes I want guarantees.

Help me walk by faith.

Teach me to trust You when I cannot see what comes next.

Help me remember that You see the whole picture.

When I'm waiting, give me patience.

When I'm afraid, give me courage.

When I want to control everything, help me surrender.

When I don't understand, help me trust Your character.

Thank You for being faithful.

Thank You for never leaving me.

Thank You for guiding me one step at a time.

Help me follow You in the ordinary moments of today.

Give me the courage to obey when You lead.

Give me the humility to wait when You say wait.

And help me remember that I don't have to know everything.

I just need to know You.

In Jesus' name,

Amen.

You Can Trust God With Today

If you've been worrying about the future, I want to encourage you to bring your attention back to today.

Jesus said in Matthew 6:34:

“Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself.”

Tomorrow will come.

And when it does, God will already be there.

You don't have to borrow tomorrow's strength today.

You don't have to solve tomorrow's problems today.

You don't have to carry tomorrow's uncertainty today.

God gives grace for today.

So walk by faith today.

Trust Him today.

Pray today.

Obey today.

Rest today.

And tomorrow, do it again.

Your Faith Doesn't Have to Be Perfect

Maybe you've been waiting to feel more confident before you call yourself a person of faith.

But faith isn't about feeling certain all the time.

It's about knowing where to turn when you aren't certain.

When you don't know, turn to Jesus.

When you're afraid, turn to Jesus.

When you're waiting, turn to Jesus.

When you're celebrating, turn to Jesus.

When you're confused, turn to Jesus.

When you don't know the next step, turn to Jesus.

That is what walking by faith looks like.

Not perfection.

Relationship.

Trust.

Dependence.

One day at a time.

Prayer is one of the simplest ways we learn to walk by faith.

We bring God our questions.

Our worries.

Our hopes.

Our decisions.

Our gratitude.

And our surrender.

You don't need perfect words.

You don't need a long prayer.

You simply need to come.

One day at a time.

One prayer at a time.

Let this be your invitation to slow down and spend intentional time with God.

Because faith grows as we walk with Him.

And you don't have to know the whole road.

You just need to trust the One who does.

So take the next step.

Then another.

Keep your eyes on Jesus.

And remember:

You may not know what tomorrow holds, but you know who holds tomorrow.

That is enough for today.
