Walking Through the Scriptures Instead of Racing Through the Bible

example of jesus growth takes time hear his voice holy spirit walk with god Aug 21, 2026

There's something about checking things off a list that feels satisfying.

Maybe you've experienced it with your daily planner. You finish a task, cross it off, and move on to the next one. Before long, it's easy to approach our time with God the very same way.

Read today's chapter.

Check.

Finish the reading plan.

Check.

Move on with the day.

I don't know about you, but there have been seasons when I was reading my Bible every day and still felt like I wasn't really slowing down enough to hear what God was saying.

I was reading.

But I wasn't always lingering.

I was moving through the pages.

But I wasn't always allowing the pages to move through me.

Maybe you've been there too.

Perhaps you've committed to reading the Bible in a year. Maybe you've started a new reading plan or challenged yourself to spend more time in God's Word. Those are wonderful goals, and there's great value in reading the whole counsel of Scripture.

But here's something I've been learning.

God isn't only inviting us to read His Word.

He's inviting us to walk with Him through it.

Sometimes that means slowing our pace.

Sometimes it means staying with one passage a little longer.

Sometimes it means reading fewer verses so our hearts have time to truly receive them.

Because the goal isn't simply to finish reading the Bible.

The goal is to know the God who gave it.

More Than Reading Words

The Bible isn't just a collection of stories, commands, or historical events.

It's the story of God's faithful love woven throughout every page.

From Genesis to Revelation, we see a God who creates, rescues, restores, and keeps His promises.

When we rush through Scripture, we can miss the beauty of those moments.

We may read about Jesus calming the storm without pausing to consider the fear the disciples must have felt.

We might skim over the Psalms without allowing David's honest prayers to give us language for our own.

Or we might hurry past Jesus' conversations with ordinary people without noticing the compassion in every interaction.

Let's slow this down for a moment.

Imagine sitting beside Mary as Jesus teaches in her home.

The room is busy.

Martha is working.

Guests are coming and going.

Yet Mary chooses to remain at Jesus' feet.

Luke tells us she "sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching" (Luke 10:39).

She wasn't trying to accomplish something.

She simply wanted to be with Him.

What does this show us about God?

It reminds us that relationship has always been His desire.

He welcomes us to sit.

To listen.

To remain.

That same invitation is waiting for us every time we open our Bible.

Reading for Relationship, Not Performance

Sometimes we put pressure on ourselves to read a certain number of chapters every day.

We compare our quiet time to someone else's.

We worry that if we don't complete the plan, we've somehow fallen behind.

But God's love isn't measured by how many chapters we finish.

He isn't keeping score.

He's inviting us into relationship.

Think about spending time with a close friend.

You wouldn't rush through the conversation just so you could say you talked.

You'd listen.

You'd pause.

You'd notice their expressions.

You'd enjoy being together.

Our time in Scripture can become like that.

Instead of asking, "How much did I read today?"

We might begin asking,

"What did I notice about God today?"

"How did this passage reveal the heart of Jesus?"

"What is the Holy Spirit gently inviting me to trust?"

Those questions shift our focus from completion to communion.

Walking Slowly Through Scripture

One of the simplest ways to slow down is to spend more time with less.

Instead of reading five chapters quickly, spend twenty minutes with one.

Read it once.

Then read it again.

Notice a word or phrase that stands out.

Ask why it caught your attention.

Imagine yourself in the scene.

What would you hear?

What would you see?

What emotions might the people have been feeling?

Then ask the question Tammy so often returns to:

What does this show us about God?

That single question has a way of opening our hearts.

Because Scripture isn't ultimately about us.

It's about Him.

And as we see Him more clearly, we begin to understand ourselves more honestly too.

The Example of Jesus

When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, He responded with Scripture.

When He taught His disciples, He explained the Scriptures.

After His resurrection, He walked with two discouraged followers on the road to Emmaus and opened the Scriptures to them.

Notice His pace.

He walked.

He explained.

He revealed.

He didn't rush.

He could have immediately revealed Himself.

Instead, He patiently unfolded God's Word until their hearts burned within them.

I love that picture.

Jesus still walks with His people through Scripture today.

He patiently teaches.

He gently reveals.

He faithfully reminds us of God's promises.

We're not reading alone.

The Holy Spirit is our teacher.

When One Verse Stays With You

Have you ever had one verse stay in your heart all day?

You read it in the morning.

Then it comes back while you're washing dishes.

Driving to work.

Waiting in line.

Folding laundry.

Those moments are gifts.

Don't hurry past them.

Sometimes one verse nourishes us more deeply than several chapters read too quickly.

Isaiah tells us that God's Word does not return empty.

It accomplishes what He purposes.

Sometimes that purpose unfolds slowly, as we carry His Word with us throughout the day.

Let Scripture Shape Your Prayers

As I've sat with this practice, I've found that slowing down naturally changes the way I pray.

Instead of moving quickly through a list of requests, I begin praying the very words I've just read.

If I'm reading Psalm 23, I thank God for being my Shepherd.

If I'm reading John 15, I ask Him to help me abide in Christ.

If I'm reading Philippians 4, I surrender my anxieties one by one.

God's Word becomes the language of my prayers.

And those prayers begin shaping my heart.

Growth Often Happens Quietly

One reason we race through Scripture is because we want immediate results.

We want to feel different.

We want instant growth.

But that's rarely how spiritual maturity develops.

Think about a tree in autumn.

Its roots have been growing long before anyone notices the beauty of changing leaves.

The strongest growth often happens beneath the surface.

The same is true in our lives.

Every quiet morning.

Every thoughtful reading.

Every whispered prayer.

Every verse hidden in your heart.

God is doing work you may not yet see.

Little by little, He is making you more like Jesus.

Practical Ways to Walk Through Scripture

If you'd like to slow down your Bible reading, here are a few simple ideas:

  • Read one chapter instead of several, and read it twice.
  • Highlight one verse that especially speaks to your heart.
  • Write that verse in your journal and reflect on what it reveals about God's character.
  • Ask, "How does this passage point me to Jesus?"
  • Pray through the Scripture before moving on with your day.
  • Return to the same passage later in the evening and notice what stands out after carrying it with you all day.

Simple practices like these help us move from information to transformation—not because we're striving harder, but because we're making space to listen.

Walking With Jesus One Page at a Time

Here's what stands out to me most.

The Bible was never meant to become another task on our list.

It's an invitation.

An invitation to know God's heart.

To hear His voice.

To remember His promises.

To see Jesus more clearly.

And the beautiful thing is, we don't have to hurry.

God isn't rushing us.

He's patient.

Faithful.

Always ready to meet us.

Whether you spend five minutes or fifty, whether you read one verse or one chapter, your Heavenly Father delights in every moment you choose to draw near.

Let's walk through the Scriptures together.

Slowly.

Prayerfully.

Expectantly.

Because sometimes the richest discoveries aren't found by reading faster.

They're found by staying a little longer in the presence of the One who wrote every word.

Journal Prompts

Take a moment with me and reflect on these questions:

  • When do I find myself rushing through God's Word?
  • What passage has stayed with me recently, and why?
  • What does today's Scripture reveal about God's character?
  • How can I create more space to linger in His Word this week?
  • What is one verse I want to carry with me today?

Write honestly. There are no perfect answers—only an invitation to spend time with the One who knows your heart completely.

A Prayer

Father,

Thank You for the gift of Your Word. Thank You that every page reveals more of Your faithful heart and points me to Jesus.

Forgive me for the times I've rushed through Scripture without slowing down to listen. Teach me to delight in Your presence rather than simply completing a reading plan. Help me notice what You're revealing about Yourself and give me a heart that longs to know You more deeply.

As I open my Bible, quiet the distractions around me and within me. Let Your Word take root in my heart and shape the way I think, speak, and live.

Thank You for patiently walking with me, one step at a time.

In Jesus' name,

Amen.
