The Secret to a Strong Faith Isn’t More Effort

bible lesson campfire blog 2 devotional bible study prayer journal Jul 18, 2026

Have you ever felt like you should be doing more spiritually?

More Bible study.

More prayer.

More church activities.

More devotionals.

Many women quietly carry the belief that if they could just try harder, they would finally become the Christian they want to be.

I understand that feeling.

I’ve had seasons where I convinced myself that spiritual growth was simply a matter of effort. If I could just find the right system, the perfect routine, or the ideal schedule, everything would finally click into place.

But over the years, I’ve discovered something surprising.

The secret to a strong faith isn’t more effort.

It’s deeper connection.

When Faith Becomes Another To-Do List

Life is busy.

For many women, the day begins before sunrise and doesn’t slow down until long after everyone else has gone to bed.

We manage households.

Care for family members.

Work jobs.

Serve others.

Carry responsibilities.

And somewhere in the middle of all that, we try to fit God into the remaining spaces.

Before long, our spiritual life can begin to feel like one more item on an already overwhelming to-do list.

Read the Bible.

Check.

Pray.

Check.

Complete the devotional.

Check.

Attend church.

Check.

None of those things are wrong.

In fact, they’re valuable spiritual practices.

But when we’re not careful, we can begin focusing more on completing tasks than cultivating relationship.

Jesus Invited Us Into Relationship

When Jesus called His disciples, He didn’t hand them a checklist.

He invited them into a relationship.

He walked with them.

Talked with them.

Taught them.

Corrected them.

Encouraged them.

Loved them.

The Christian life was never intended to be a race to spiritual achievement.

It was designed to be a daily walk with Christ.

Sometimes I think we’ve made faith much more complicated than Jesus did.

We focus on mastering spiritual disciplines while forgetting that those disciplines were meant to help us know Him better.

The goal was never perfect Bible study attendance.

The goal was always intimacy with God.

The Campfire Lesson

Imagine sitting beside a campfire.

You don’t have to force the fire to burn.

You simply keep returning to it.

You tend it.

You add fuel.

You stay near the warmth.

The fire does what fire naturally does.

Faith often grows the same way.

We don’t manufacture spiritual growth.

God produces growth as we remain close to Him.

Our role is not to force transformation.

Our role is to stay connected.

Stay in His Word.

Stay in prayer.

Stay in His presence.

Stay close to the fire.

Small Rhythms Create Strong Foundations

One of the greatest misunderstandings about spiritual growth is believing that bigger is always better.

We think:

“I need an hour-long quiet time.”

“I need to read multiple chapters.”

“I need to understand everything.”

But often God begins with something much simpler.

Five minutes of prayer.

One Psalm.

One verse carried throughout the day.

One honest conversation with Him.

Small rhythms practiced consistently will often shape us more deeply than grand plans we abandon after two weeks.

Why?

Because consistency creates roots.

And roots create stability.

What If Growth Is Already Happening?

Sometimes we don’t recognize growth because it doesn’t look dramatic.

You may not feel different.

You may still have questions.

You may still struggle.

But perhaps you’re becoming more patient.

Perhaps you’re learning to trust God more quickly.

Perhaps you’re returning to prayer sooner.

Perhaps you’re becoming more aware of His presence.

Growth often happens beneath the surface long before it becomes visible above the ground.

Just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean God isn’t working.

A Different Question

Instead of asking:

“How can I do more?”

Try asking:

“How can I stay closer to Jesus today?”

That single question changes everything.

Because faith was never meant to be fueled by pressure.

It grows through presence.

Not striving.

Not perfection.

Not performance.

Presence.

One faithful day at a time.

One conversation with God at a time.

One step on the trail at a time.
