The Gift of Waiting on God

There's something about waiting that most of us don't enjoy.

We wait for prayers to be answered.
We wait for healing.
We wait for a new job.
We wait for a relationship to be restored.
We wait for clarity about what comes next.

If you're anything like me, waiting can feel uncomfortable because we naturally want to know what's ahead. We like plans. We like progress. We like seeing things move.

But God often works differently than we expect.

I've noticed that some of the greatest lessons He's taught me didn't happen after the waiting was over. They happened while I was still in it.

Maybe you're in a season like that right now.

Perhaps you've been praying for something for weeks, months, or even years. Maybe you're wondering why God seems quiet. Maybe you've started asking questions that are difficult to say out loud.

"Lord, are You listening?"

"Have You forgotten me?"

"When will things change?"

If those questions have crossed your mind, I want to encourage you today—you are not alone.

Let's walk through this together.

Waiting Has Always Been Part of God's Story

When we read the Bible slowly, we begin to notice something.

Waiting isn't the exception.

It's often part of the way God works.

Abraham waited years before seeing God's promise fulfilled.

Joseph waited through betrayal, slavery, and prison before stepping into the purpose God had prepared for him.

David was anointed as king long before he ever wore the crown.

The Israelites waited for generations for the promised Messiah.

Even after Jesus rose from the dead, His disciples were told to wait for the Holy Spirit.

Waiting has always been woven into God's story.

And because of that, it becomes part of ours too.

Let's Slow This Down for a Moment

Sometimes we think waiting means nothing is happening.

But what if that's not true?

Imagine planting a seed in the ground.

For a while, you don't see anything.

The soil looks unchanged.

It would be easy to assume nothing is growing.

Yet beneath the surface, roots are forming.

Life is beginning.

Strength is developing where no one can see it.

Our spiritual lives often look the same.

While we're waiting for God to work around us, He's often working within us.

Growing patience.

Deepening trust.

Teaching dependence.

Drawing us closer to Himself.

What does this show us about God?

He is never inactive.

Even when He seems quiet, He is faithfully working.

God's Timing Is Never Wasted

One verse I come back to often is Isaiah 40:31:

"But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength..."

Notice what Scripture doesn't say.

It doesn't promise that waiting will always be easy.

It promises that God meets us there.

Waiting isn't simply time we have to endure until life gets better.

Waiting can become holy ground because it's where we learn to trust the One who already sees the whole picture.

As I've sat with this passage, I've realized something.

God is never late.

He's also never rushed.

He isn't reacting to our circumstances.

He's already present in tomorrow while faithfully walking with us today.

Waiting Changes Us

Most of us pray for God to change our circumstances.

And sometimes He does.

But often, before He changes our circumstances, He changes us.

I've found that waiting has a way of revealing what's happening in my own heart.

Am I trusting God only when I understand His plan?

Am I trying to control what belongs in His hands?

Am I willing to believe He is good, even when I don't have the answers?

Those aren't always easy questions.

But they are good ones.

Because God cares about who we're becoming, not just where we're going.

Jesus Understands Waiting

One of the things that comforts me most is knowing that Jesus understands what it means to wait.

He spent years living quietly before beginning His public ministry.

He often withdrew to spend time with His Father instead of rushing ahead.

In the Garden of Gethsemane, He surrendered to the Father's timing, even though the road ahead would be painful.

Jesus never hurried God's plan.

He trusted it.

And because He did, we have hope today.

What If Waiting Is a Gift?

That may sound strange at first.

After all, waiting rarely feels like a gift.

But what if the waiting itself is drawing us into a deeper relationship with Jesus?

What if the unanswered prayer is teaching us to depend on Him daily?

What if the delay is protecting us from something we cannot yet see?

What if God is preparing us for what we've been praying for?

Sometimes we only recognize the gift after we've walked through it.

And here's what I've learned.

The greatest gift isn't always receiving what we've been asking for.

It's discovering that Jesus has been enough all along.

Choosing Faith While We Wait

Waiting doesn't mean we stop living.

It means we continue walking faithfully today.

Keep praying.

Keep reading God's Word.

Keep serving.

Keep trusting.

Keep showing up.

Faith isn't proven after the answer arrives.

Faith grows while we're still waiting.

Practical Ways to Wait Well

If you're walking through a season of waiting, here are a few gentle practices that have helped me.

Spend a few quiet minutes with the Lord before reaching for your phone.

Write down one way you've seen God's faithfulness each day.

Pray honestly. God already knows your heart.

Read one Psalm each morning and allow its words to become your prayer.

Look for small reminders that God is working, even when life feels still.

Celebrate someone else's answered prayer while continuing to trust God with your own.

Waiting doesn't have to mean standing still spiritually.

Sometimes it's where our roots grow deepest.

God Is Faithful in Every Season

Maybe today you're still waiting.

Waiting for healing.

Waiting for reconciliation.

Waiting for direction.

Waiting for hope to return.

I want to encourage you with this.

The God who has been faithful throughout Scripture is still faithful today.

He hasn't forgotten you.

He isn't distant.

He isn't withholding His love.

He's inviting you to trust Him one day at a time.

Even here.

Especially here.

Because the greatest gift you'll discover in waiting isn't simply the answer you've been hoping for.

It's knowing Jesus more deeply than you did before.

Take a moment with the Lord and reflect on these questions.

• What am I waiting on God for today?
• How have I seen His faithfulness in previous seasons of waiting?
• What might God be growing in me during this season?
• Where am I struggling to trust His timing?
• What would it look like to surrender my timeline to Him today?
• How can I draw closer to Jesus while I wait?

Prayer

Father,

Waiting isn't always easy. There are days when I grow tired, discouraged, or impatient. Thank You for reminding me that You are always working, even when I cannot see it. Help me trust Your timing instead of my own. Grow my faith in this season, and teach me to depend on You more each day.

Thank You for being faithful in every promise You've ever made. Help me remember that Your presence is the greatest gift, no matter what I am waiting for.

Give me peace as I trust You one step at a time.
