Rooted in Christ: Growing Deep Before the Harvest

There’s something beautiful about watching a garden grow.

At first, it doesn’t look like much.

You plant the seed, water the soil, and wait. Days pass, and it can seem like nothing is happening. If you're anything like me, you might even wonder if the seed is growing at all.

But beneath the surface, something important is taking place.

Roots are growing.

Long before we ever see blossoms or fruit, the plant is developing a strong foundation. Those unseen roots will eventually support everything that grows above the ground.

I’ve often thought that our walk with Jesus looks a lot like that.

We naturally look for visible growth. We want to see answered prayers, changed circumstances, and clear evidence that God is moving. But so often, God begins His work in the hidden places of our hearts.

And here’s what I’ve learned.

God is just as interested in growing our roots as He is in growing our fruit.

Sometimes, before He brings the harvest, He first invites us to grow deeper.

The Beauty of Hidden Growth

We live in a world that celebrates what people can see.

Accomplishments.

Milestones.

Success.

It's easy to believe that if we can't see progress, then nothing is happening.

But God often works differently.

His most meaningful work is frequently unseen.

Take a moment with me and imagine a tree standing through a fierce storm.

What keeps it from falling?

It isn't the branches everyone admires.

It's the roots no one sees.

Those roots have been quietly growing for years, reaching deeper into the soil, drawing strength and nourishment day after day.

Our faith grows in much the same way.

The quiet mornings spent reading Scripture.

The prayers whispered before the day begins.

The moments of choosing trust instead of fear.

The decision to obey God even when no one else notices.

These may seem small, but they are helping our spiritual roots grow deeper.

God sees every one of them.

Rooted in Christ

One of my favorite pictures of spiritual growth comes from Colossians 2:6–7:

"Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith..."

I love that Paul begins with being rooted before he talks about being built up.

Roots come first.

Let's slow this down for a moment.

Roots aren't rushed.

They don't grow overnight.

They're formed over time as they remain connected to their source of life.

The same is true for us.

Our strength doesn't come from trying harder.

It comes from remaining close to Jesus.

What stands out to you here?

For me, it's the reminder that spiritual maturity isn't something we manufacture.

It's something God grows in us as we stay connected to Him.

Jesus Spoke About Remaining

In John 15, Jesus gives us another beautiful picture.

He describes Himself as the vine and His followers as the branches.

Then He says something wonderfully simple:

"Abide in me."

Or as some translations say,

"Remain in me."

Notice what Jesus doesn't say.

He doesn't tell us to strive harder.

He doesn't tell us to produce fruit through our own effort.

He invites us to remain.

That's such an important difference.

Fruit is the result of connection.

When a branch stays connected to the vine, life naturally flows through it.

The branch doesn't have to force growth.

It simply stays where life is found.

What might that look like for us today?

It might mean beginning each morning with a few quiet moments in God's Word.

It might mean praying throughout the day instead of waiting until we feel overwhelmed.

It might mean choosing to trust His promises when our feelings tell us something different.

Remaining isn't complicated.

But it is intentional.

Why God Often Grows Us Slowly

If I could choose, I'd probably prefer instant spiritual growth.

Wouldn't that be nice?

One prayer.

One Bible study.

One Sunday sermon.

And suddenly we're patient, courageous, and unwavering in our faith.

But that's not usually how God works.

Instead, He grows us gradually.

Little by little.

Day by day.

Season by season.

At first, that can feel discouraging.

Especially when we're praying for change.

But there's wisdom in God's pace.

As I've sat with this truth, I've realized that slow growth often becomes lasting growth.

God isn't interested in temporary change.

He's shaping hearts that will continue trusting Him for years to come.

Preparing for the Harvest

Throughout Scripture, harvest is often connected to God's blessing, provision, and faithfulness.

But every harvest begins with preparation.

Farmers don't scatter seed one day and gather crops the next.

There is planting.

Watering.

Waiting.

Growth.

Then comes the harvest.

Spiritually, we often want to skip those middle steps.

We long for the harvest while overlooking the importance of becoming deeply rooted.

Yet God knows that fruit without strong roots won't last.

He lovingly prepares us before entrusting us with what comes next.

That preparation may include seasons that feel quiet.

Hidden.

Even ordinary.

But don't mistake quiet for unimportant.

Some of God's greatest work happens beneath the surface.

Trusting God in the Waiting

Waiting can be one of the hardest parts of following Jesus.

Especially when we've been praying for something good.

Healing.

Restoration.

Direction.

A new opportunity.

A prodigal child.

A softened heart.

Whatever you've been waiting for, I want to encourage you today.

God has not forgotten you.

While you're waiting for what He's doing around you, He's also working within you.

Sometimes He's strengthening your faith.

Sometimes He's teaching you dependence.

Sometimes He's deepening your trust.

Those are gifts that often become clearer as we look back.

When we're in the middle of waiting, it's not always easy to recognize what God is accomplishing.

But He is always faithful.

Staying Rooted in Everyday Life

Being rooted in Christ isn't reserved for Sunday mornings.

It's something we carry into everyday life.

Into our homes.

Our workplaces.

Our conversations.

Our decisions.

It looks like returning to Scripture before we rely on our own understanding.

It looks like bringing our worries to God instead of carrying them alone.

It looks like remembering His faithfulness when circumstances feel uncertain.

And perhaps most importantly, it looks like continuing to come back to Jesus.

Again and again.

Even after difficult days.

Even after seasons where we've wandered.

Our roots grow deeper every time we return to Him.

What Deep Roots Can Look Like

Deep spiritual roots don't always look impressive from the outside.

Sometimes they look like quiet faithfulness.

Choosing forgiveness when it's difficult.

Showing kindness when no one notices.

Trusting God when answers haven't come.

Opening your Bible even when life feels busy.

Praying even when the words feel simple.

Continuing to hope because you know God's character.

Those quiet choices matter.

They are shaping who you're becoming.

And God delights in that kind of steady growth.

A Gentle Reminder

If you've been wondering why this season feels slower than you expected, maybe God is doing exactly what your heart needs most.

Maybe He's growing roots.

Maybe He's strengthening your faith in ways that aren't yet visible.

Maybe He's preparing you for a harvest you can't quite see.

Don't rush what God is growing.

Stay close to Jesus.

Remain in His Word.

Trust His timing.

The roots you grow today will support the fruit He brings tomorrow.

And when the harvest comes, you'll know it wasn't built on your own strength.

It was built on the steady, faithful work of God.

• Where do I sense God inviting me to grow deeper in my relationship with Him?
• Am I focused more on visible results or on remaining close to Jesus?
• How have I seen God grow my faith through previous seasons of waiting?
• What daily rhythms help me stay rooted in God's Word?
• What is one area of my life where I need to trust God's timing instead of my own?

Prayer

Father,

Thank You for being patient as You grow me. Thank You that You care not only about the fruit others can see but also about the roots You're developing within my heart.

Help me remain close to You each day. Teach me to delight in Your Word, trust Your timing, and depend on Your strength instead of my own. When growth feels slow, remind me that You are always at work, even in the hidden places.

Strengthen my faith during seasons of waiting, and help me remember that every quiet act of obedience matters to You. Prepare my heart for whatever You have ahead, and let my life bear fruit that points others to Jesus.
