How Bible Journaling Helps You Remember God's Faithfulness

There’s something about writing things down that helps us hold onto them a little longer.

I don’t know about you, but there have been seasons where I’ve been so focused on what was happening right in front of me that I forgot how faithfully God had carried me through everything behind me.

Maybe you've experienced that too.

A difficult conversation.
An unanswered prayer.
An unexpected change.
A season that feels uncertain.

When our hearts are full of questions, it's easy to lose sight of all the ways God has already shown Himself faithful.

And here's what I've learned.

Sometimes remembering God's faithfulness isn't automatic.

Sometimes it's intentional.

That's one of the reasons I've grown to love Bible journaling over the years. It isn't about making beautiful pages or creating something worthy of sharing online. It isn't about perfect handwriting, artistic talent, or having the right supplies.

It's about slowing down long enough to notice God.

To linger over His Word.

To write down what He's teaching us before life moves on to the next thing.

Because when we take the time to remember His faithfulness, our hearts are strengthened for whatever comes next.

Let's walk through this together.

God Often Asked His People to Remember

As you read through Scripture, one theme appears again and again.

Remember.

God repeatedly invited His people to remember what He had done.

He reminded Israel of their deliverance from Egypt.

He instructed them to celebrate feasts that would help future generations remember His faithfulness.

After crossing the Jordan River, Joshua instructed the people to gather twelve stones as a memorial.

Let's slow this down for a moment.

Imagine standing beside that river.

The water had only recently parted.

The people had just witnessed another miracle of God.

It would have been easy to celebrate and keep moving.

Instead, God told them to stop.

To build something that would help them remember.

Why?

Because He knew something about the human heart.

We remember our worries more easily than we remember God's faithfulness.

Those stones weren't for God.

They were for His people.

Every time someone passed by, they would remember.

God was faithful here.

What stands out to you in that?

For me, it's the reminder that remembering is part of growing in our faith.

And in many ways, Bible journaling becomes our own collection of memorial stones.

Every page tells a story.

Every note reminds us of a moment when God met us.

Bible Journaling Is About Relationship, Not Perfection

One of the biggest misconceptions about Bible journaling is that it has to be artistic.

Maybe you've seen beautifully illustrated Bible pages online and thought,

"I could never do that."

Can I encourage you with something?

God isn't looking at your artistic ability.

He's looking at your heart.

Bible journaling can be as simple as underlining a verse.

Writing a prayer in the margin.

Adding today's date beside a Scripture that spoke to you.

Keeping a notebook nearby where you write what you're learning.

None of those things require creativity.

They simply require a willing heart.

The goal isn't to create something beautiful.

The goal is to spend time with Jesus.

And that's something every one of us can do.

Slowing Down Changes the Way We Read Scripture

There have been mornings when I've opened my Bible with every intention of reading several chapters.

Then one verse stopped me.

Instead of rushing ahead, I stayed there.

I read it again.

Then again.

I asked myself,

"What does this reveal about God's character?"

"What might God be showing me today?"

As I wrote those thoughts in my journal, something shifted.

The verse moved from my eyes to my heart.

That's one of the gifts of Bible journaling.

It helps us slow down.

We aren't simply trying to finish a reading plan.

We're making space to listen.

Psalm 46:10 reminds us,

"Be still, and know that I am God."

Stillness isn't always easy in our busy world.

But journaling creates a quiet place where we can pause long enough to notice what God is saying through His Word.

Looking Back Strengthens Our Faith

One of my favorite things about keeping a Bible journal is returning to older pages.

Sometimes I'll find a prayer I had completely forgotten writing.

A verse that carried me through a difficult season.

A date beside a promise God faithfully answered.

And suddenly I'm reminded.

God has been here before.

He carried me then.

He'll carry me now.

Have you ever looked back through an old journal?

It's amazing how clearly God's fingerprints appear when we look back.

In the middle of a difficult season, we often wonder if He's working.

Months later, we can see that He never stopped.

Bible journaling gives us a place to record those moments before we forget them.

God's Faithfulness Is Often Found in Ordinary Days

Sometimes we expect God's faithfulness to appear only in dramatic moments.

Miracles.

Big answers to prayer.

Life-changing events.

Those moments certainly happen.

But I've found that much of God's faithfulness shows up quietly.

Morning after morning.

One day at a time.

The strength to keep going.

Peace during uncertainty.

Wisdom for one decision.

Comfort when tears come.

A timely conversation.

A verse that seems written specifically for today's circumstances.

These ordinary gifts are worth remembering too.

When we write them down, we begin noticing them more often.

Gratitude grows.

Faith grows.

Hope grows.

Not because life becomes easier.

But because our eyes become more attentive to God's presence.

Your Journal Becomes a Testimony

One day, someone else may read your journal.

A child.

A grandchild.

A close friend.

Or perhaps no one else ever will.

Either way, your journal tells a story.

Not primarily about you.

About God.

His patience.

His kindness.

His provision.

His forgiveness.

His faithfulness.

As I've thought about this, I've realized that Bible journaling isn't simply recording what we read.

It's recording what God is doing in our lives through His Word.

Years from now, those pages may become one of the sweetest reminders that God never stopped working.

There Is Freedom to Make It Your Own

One of the beautiful things about Bible journaling is that it doesn't have to look the same for everyone.

Maybe you enjoy adding watercolor flowers and creative lettering.

Maybe you prefer simple notes in the margins.

Perhaps you keep a separate notebook filled with prayers and reflections.

Or maybe you simply highlight verses using different colors.

Every one of those approaches is valuable.

The important question isn't,

"Does my journal look beautiful?"

The better question is,

"Is it helping me spend time with Jesus?"

God isn't comparing your pages with anyone else's.

He's inviting you into relationship.

And relationships always look personal.

Creating a Simple Rhythm

If you're wondering where to begin, don't overcomplicate it.

Choose one passage of Scripture.

Read it slowly.

Ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand what you're reading.

Then write down what stands out.

You might ask yourself:

• What does this passage teach me about God?
• What promise do I want to remember?
• Is there a command to follow?
• Is there a prayer I want to pray?
• How is God inviting me to trust Him today?

That's enough.

Some days you'll write several pages.

Other days, only one sentence.

Both are valuable.

Remember, consistency matters far more than perfection.

When Life Feels Heavy

There will be seasons when opening your Bible feels difficult.

Grief has a way of making words harder to find.

Waiting can leave us tired.

Disappointment sometimes quiets our prayers.

If you find yourself there today, I want to encourage you.

Don't feel pressured to write something profound.

Simply write what's true.

"Lord, today feels heavy."

"I don't understand."

"I'm trying to trust You."

"I need Your help."

Those honest prayers matter.

God welcomes them.

Sometimes the most meaningful journal entries aren't the polished ones.

They're the honest ones.

Because that's where relationship grows.

A Gentle Reminder

If you've been thinking about starting a Bible journal, maybe today is a beautiful day to begin.

Not because you'll fill every page perfectly.

Not because you'll never miss a day.

But because every page becomes another opportunity to remember.

To notice.

To slow down.

To see God's faithfulness one verse at a time.

Years from now, you may look back through those pages and discover something wonderful.

God was faithful on every single one of them.

Some days He answered your prayers exactly as you hoped.

Some days He strengthened you while you waited.

Some days He gently reminded you that His grace was enough.

Every page tells the same story.

God never stopped being faithful.

And He never will.

Take a few quiet moments with the Lord and reflect on these questions:

• When have I seen God's faithfulness most clearly in my life?
• Is there a verse that has carried me through a difficult season?
• What is God teaching me in this current season?
• How could Bible journaling help me slow down and notice His presence more often?
• What is one simple step I can take this week to begin recording God's faithfulness?

Prayer

Father,

Thank You for Your faithfulness that never changes. Thank You for meeting me in both the joyful seasons and the difficult ones. Thank You that Your Word continues to guide, encourage, and strengthen my heart each day.

Help me slow down enough to notice what You are teaching me through Scripture. Give me a heart that treasures Your Word and remembers Your goodness. Whether I write one sentence or many pages, let my time with You become less about perfection and more about relationship.

When I forget how faithful You have been, gently remind me. Help me look back with gratitude and look ahead with confidence, knowing You will continue to lead me one step at a time.

May every page I write become a testimony of Your love, Your grace, and Your steady presence in my life.
