Bible Journaling Ideas Inspired by Autumn

There's something about autumn that makes me want to linger a little longer.

Maybe it's the crisp morning air.

Maybe it's the way the leaves quietly change color without trying to impress anyone.

Or maybe it's simply that this season reminds us that slowing down can be beautiful.

I don't know about you, but when life feels especially busy, I find myself craving quiet moments with God even more.

Not because I have all the answers.

But because I need His perspective.

I need His peace.

I need to remember that while everything around me may be changing, He never does.

One of my favorite ways to slow down with Scripture is through Bible journaling.

Now, if the words "Bible journaling" make you think of perfectly painted pages or beautiful hand lettering, let me encourage you.

That's not what it's about.

Bible journaling isn't about creating something impressive.

It's about paying attention.

It's about slowing down long enough to notice what God is saying through His Word.

Sometimes my pages are filled with colorful notes.

Other times they're nothing more than a few underlined verses and a simple prayer written in the margin.

Both are meaningful.

Because the purpose isn't creating a masterpiece.

The purpose is meeting with Jesus.

As the beauty of fall surrounds us, let's explore a few Bible journaling ideas that can help us notice God's faithfulness in this season.

Autumn Invites Us to Slow Down

One of the things I love about autumn is that creation seems to move at a different pace.

Leaves don't rush to change colors.

Trees don't panic when they begin letting go.

They simply respond to the season they were created for.

There's something peaceful about that.

I wonder how often we resist the seasons God is leading us through.

We hurry.

We compare.

We try to force growth before it's time.

Yet Scripture often reminds us that God works through seasons.

Ecclesiastes tells us there is "a time for every matter under heaven."

Take a moment with me.

What season is your heart in today?

Are you celebrating?

Waiting?

Healing?

Beginning again?

Your Bible journal can become a place where you honestly bring that season before God.

Let Scripture Be the Center

One of the greatest gifts of Bible journaling is that it keeps us focused on God's Word.

Instead of simply reading quickly and moving on, journaling invites us to linger.

To notice.

To ask questions.

As you read, pause and ask yourself:

What stands out to me?

What does this reveal about God's character?

How does this encourage me today?

What is God inviting me to trust?

Sometimes one verse is enough to fill an entire journal page.

And that's okay.

God often speaks through quiet reflection more than hurried reading.

Bible Journaling Idea #1: Create a Gratitude Page

Autumn naturally reminds us of gratitude.

As harvest season arrives, we're reminded that every good gift comes from God.

Choose a passage like Psalm 100 or James 1:17.

Write the verses in your journal.

Then begin listing ways you've seen God's faithfulness this year.

They don't have to be extraordinary.

A conversation that encouraged you.

Strength during a difficult week.

A beautiful sunrise.

A prayer quietly answered.

The more we practice gratitude, the more we begin noticing God's hand in ordinary moments.

Bible Journaling Idea #2: Study the Seasons in Scripture

The Bible often uses seasons to teach spiritual truths.

Read Ecclesiastes 3:1–8.

Galatians 6:9.

Psalm 1.

John 15.

As you journal, notice what these passages reveal.

What season are you currently walking through?

Where do you see yourself in these verses?

What is God growing beneath the surface?

You may discover that your current season is preparing you for something beautiful you cannot yet see.

Bible Journaling Idea #3: Press Autumn Leaves Into Your Journal

One simple way to remember this season is by pressing a few colorful leaves between the pages of your journal or using them as inspiration for a journal spread.

As you do, reflect on Isaiah 40:8:

"The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever." (ESV)

The changing leaves remind us that life changes.

God does not.

Write about the things in your life that feel uncertain.

Then write down the promises of God that remain unchanged.

Bible Journaling Idea #4: Highlight God's Faithfulness

Choose one color highlighter and dedicate it to every verse that reminds you of God's faithfulness.

As the weeks go by, you'll begin seeing a beautiful collection of promises throughout your Bible.

You might include passages like:

• Lamentations 3:22–23
• Deuteronomy 31:8
• Psalm 23
• Hebrews 13:8
• Philippians 1:6

Over time, those highlighted pages become a visual reminder that God's faithfulness is woven throughout all of Scripture.

Bible Journaling Idea #5: Write Your Prayers Beside the Passage

Sometimes I don't know what to write.

So I simply pray.

If a verse encourages you, respond to God right there on the page.

"Father, help me trust You here."

"Thank You for reminding me that You're near."

"I surrender this worry to You today."

Bible journaling becomes less about taking notes and more about having a conversation with the Lord.

Bible Journaling Idea #6: Draw What You Notice

You don't have to be an artist.

Simple sketches can become meaningful reminders.

Draw an acorn beside a verse about faith growing over time.

Sketch a tree next to Psalm 1.

Add falling leaves around a passage about God's unchanging love.

A small candle beside Psalm 119 can remind you that God's Word is a lamp to your feet.

These simple illustrations help slow your reading and invite deeper reflection.

Bible Journaling Idea #7: Keep a "God Is…" Page

This has become one of my favorite journaling habits.

Each time you read Scripture, write down something it reveals about God's character.

God is faithful.

God is patient.

God is my Shepherd.

God is my refuge.

God is compassionate.

God is my peace.

As the page fills over time, you'll have a beautiful reminder of who God has been through every season of your life.

Bible Journaling Isn't About Perfection

Can I encourage you with something?

Your journal doesn't have to look like anyone else's.

Comparison has a way of stealing joy from things God intended to be life-giving.

Some days your page may include watercolor and beautiful lettering.

Other days it may only contain one sentence and a tear-stained prayer.

Both are valuable.

Because God isn't evaluating your creativity.

He's looking at your heart.

He delights in every moment you choose to spend with Him.

What Does This Reveal About God?

I love asking this question because it keeps bringing us back to what matters most.

So what do these simple journaling moments reveal?

They remind us that God wants relationship.

He invites us to slow down.

He patiently teaches us through His Word.

He meets us in ordinary moments.

He speaks through Scripture again and again.

And He is never in a hurry.

The beauty of autumn reminds us that healthy growth happens over time.

So does spiritual growth.

Every verse you read.

Every prayer you write.

Every truth you underline.

Every quiet moment spent with Jesus becomes another root growing deeper into His love.

A Gentle Invitation This Fall

Father,

Thank You for inviting me into Your presence through Your Word.

Thank You that I don't have to rush through Scripture or strive for perfection. You simply ask me to come and spend time with You.

As I open my Bible this season, help me notice what You are teaching me. Give me a heart that is willing to listen, eyes that are quick to see Your faithfulness, and a spirit that is eager to grow closer to Jesus.

Teach me to treasure quiet moments with You more than busy accomplishments. Let every page I journal become a reminder that You are always speaking through Your Word and always drawing me closer to Yourself.

Thank You for being faithful in every season of life.
